Michael Plunkett Obituary

Michael Charles Plunkett, residing in Colorado Springs since 1975, passed away at home on Saturday, May 26, 2012 following a brave battle with a progressive neurological illness. He was formerly adjunct faculty at Pikes Peak Community College and the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Michael was a Licensed Professional Counselor who dedicated his life to those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. He retired from the El Paso County Department of Health where he was the Program Director of the Drug and Alcohol Counseling and Prevention Programs (formerly McMaster Center). He then accepted the position of Program Director, Harbor House Collaborative, McMaster Clinic. Michael knew the value of community collaboration, and served on the boards of the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, Pikes Peak Region, the Southern Colorado AIDS Project and later, Harbor House Collaborative. Michael is survived by his wife, Lynn Plummer-Plunkett; his son Joshua Edward Plunkett; his step-daughter Laura (Mike) Phillips Eaton residing in Texas; his brothers Stephen Plunkett (Karen, deceased) of Orlando, Florida, Richard (Kathleen) Plunkett of Buffalo, New York, and Terrence (Donna) Plunkett of Colorado Springs; and 7 nieces and nephews. Dear Plunkett Family,
I think of Mike often. I can still picture and relive conversations when he was so passionate about something, whether it was his family, social issues, or spiritual issues. He stays alive in my heart.

Michael was an awesome guy - What i most rememberd was leaving McMaster and going across the street to smoke while Michael discussed all kinds of esoteric philosophies of life, most of which i didnt get! He was an inspiration to me and many of the clients and staff! Your light will always shine for those that knew you Michael.

To the Plunkett Family,
Michael changed the lives of so many with his passion and commitment to those who did not have a voice. He will always be in my heart and the hearts of many. The world is a better place because of him and his love. Josh he was always so proud of you and you were the apple of his eye...always. Lynn, you two were a match made in heaven. God Bless You.

To the Plunkett Family,
I was so sorry to read about Michael's passing. I am the daughter of Muriel & Alex Kerlin from Congers, and my parents and Steve and Naomi were very good friends. I spent alot of time at the Plunkett house, and was always treated like a little sister by the boys. I remember how sad we all were when you moved to Colorado. May you all find peace in the loving memories of Michael.

Mike will be sorely missed in the community, his quiet passion and devotion to seeing lives changed will live on for generations to come in the hearts of those who really "got it". I was greatly inspired by his passion and commitment, and it changed the course of my career and my heart for the addicted. Peace to you Mike, and condolences to your family.

Michael was a good friend and wise consult. I first met him in 1990 at the Tejon Street Clinic and he taught me all I needed to know in the world of substance abuse. His quick wit and easy going nature made him a friend to all who met him. He carried a medal for the patron saint of lost causes and cherished the downtroden. Passionate about his work, he truly cared about the people he helped. Esteemed by co-workers, he was a leader. Micheal was a good dad and spoke frequently about his beloved son. He was very proud of Josh. His lovely wife Lynn was the best thing that ever happened to him. When they got together, he seemed to at last find peace in his soul. The stars will burn brighter with Michael out there. I will miss my friend. Blessings to his family for the love and care you gave him.
