Michael Rakes Obituary

Michael Joe Rakes Michael Joe Rakes, 57, of La Mesa, CA passed away on Monday, April 29th in Visalia, CA while in emergency open heart surgery. Mike befriended everyone he met, inspiring them with his witty and charismatic outlook on life. He never met a stranger and always found the good in people. His never-ending smile, larger-than-life laugh and ability to light up a room will be missed. He will remain a passionate, strong, selfless man to all that have had the privilege of meeting him. He prided himself in teaching his family and all who knew him about his "Lessons of Life" and was planning on writing a book one day. Some of his favorite lessons of life were, "Laugh, Love and Live" and "It's always better to ask for forgiveness then ask for permission." Mike was born on June 29, 1955 in Bentonville, Arkansas. He grew up working on the family dairy farm. Mike followed his passion for dairy cattle and received a Bachelor of Science in Dairy Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He was active in school as student Senator, National Officer in ADSA and was the outstanding graduating senior. In 1994, Mike completed an executive MBA program at Pepperdine University. Mike was an incredible colleague and a great friend, to many around the world. He worked in over 50 countries on four continents during his 34 year career at World Wide Sires; most recently in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Iran, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China and Taiwan. Mike was very involved in the dairy industry and local community. He was a past Director of the National Dairy Shrine, Rotarian and Director of the YMCA. Mike's everlasting hard work and determination is a testament to his success in his career and also to his strong family. He was a proud husband, father of 4 incredible daughters and grandfather of two that were the center of his life. He and his wife Debra just celebrated 22 years of marriage and were looking forward to being empty nesters in the fall. He took the bull by the horns and fought to provide a beautiful life for his wife and girls, meeting all challenges with courage, poise, and wisdom. His family will be forever grateful for the constant support he provided. He was always the person to go to for advice on resumes, school papers and any life decisions. He was "the rock" of the family and he served as a mentor to so many people. Mike is survived by his wife Debra Rakes, daughter Brenna Keck (Peter Keck), daughter Brittney Creasey (Alexander Creasey), daughter Brooke Rakes, daughter Brilynn Rakes, grandchildren Noelle and Asher Keck, brother Randy Rakes (Jack Rakes), sister Missy Gentile(Russ Gentile), father Jerry Rakes, and mother Betty Rakes. Mike's 'Celebration of Life' memorial service will be held Friday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at Visalia First Assembly of God, with a reception at World Wide Sires following the memorial. Private burial. What can I say?? Jerry & Betty had three children, Randy, Mike, and Missy. Gerry and I had three children, Larry, Mark, and Shari in that order, and the same coresponding ages to Randy, Mike, and Missy. That's right, both had two boys and one lovely girl. Jim & Jerry were probably closer than brothers birth thru teenage, even though cousins. His grandpa Joe was a brother to my grandpa Asa AKA Uncle Bud. Mike and Mark worked together many hot summer days in the hay and etc. on the Benton County farm. Our Mark left this world Aug. 9, 2009 at age 53. It's ironic that our two middle children are now gone on to a better life. It is also so comforting to know how very very sweet these two giants really were, although, separate in their career paths. Let your mind surf a bit so it can create a picture of how they (Mike & Mark) might have greeted each other as they rested a spell in the new home. And, reckon my Gerry, might have spotted them as they laughed and joked then climbed aboard the conversation. Jerry, Betty, and the rest of you wonderful guys, we share deeply in your sorrow and understand it perfectly. We like Mike got to see Brilynn's super performance on "Dancing With The Stars." To Brilynn, we say, Surely you made your daddy very proud during his final few days. You are such a beautiful person, inside and outwardly. Charlene and I hope to see you, Jerry & Betty, maybe this summer. But, For now we send our love and comfort and will do what ever we can to help you if you let me know. Jim & Charlene Rakes

Mike had a tremendous passion for life. He was like a big brother to me for many years, and was such a positive influence. Though he has passed well before his time, he has already lived a life bigger and fuller than most of us will if we live to be one hundred and fifty seven. I am honored to have know him and early in life and want to express to his family my deepest condolences. To Jerry, Betty, Randy, Missy, we love and miss you guys and pray that God will strengthen you through this time of sorrow.

I remember Mike as my "extra kid brother". He and my brother, Jim were very best friends growing up.I remember them always being together during the summer, thinking up situations to get into! Mike was always such a nice guy. (My Grandmother Drake just loved him!) I am so sorry he left this earth at such a young age. Our family has your family in our prayers.

The first time I met Mike Rakes, we talked for about an hour as he toured my model homes. He was so easy to talk to. He told me about all that he had overcome in the recent years and he was so inspiring. I am glad to have gotten the opportunity to know him and work with him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

It is still very hard to believe that this tragedy happened to you. Even though I just knew you last October, but you left a very deep impression and inspiration in me. You are a great man with great visions. You taught me not to worry about anything, and never stop until the end. Thank you for the lessons and all the infectious laugh. You really had been a blessing to people around you. You will be deeply missed. You are in a much more better place right now.
My deepest condolences for Mike's family and WWS family. My prayers and thoughts are with you through this hard times.

When we first moved into our new home at Marcin Estates, Mike was the first person to welcome us. It was extremely uplifting every time I spoke with Mike. His sense of humor could warm any heart and what he had to say always had a meaning. I will greatly miss Mike and it was an honor to know him. Rest in Peace Mike.
