Michael Wilcox Obituary

Michael John Wilcox, 67, died Nov. 16, 2015, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was born March 20, 1948, in Detroit, MI, the son of Fred and LaVergne Wilcox.

Dr. Wilcox attended Purdue University, majoring in Psychology for his Bachelor's Degree and Physics for his PhD. After graduation, he held positions in Europe and the United States advancing glaucoma research and artificial vision systems. Dr. Wilcox moved to Albuquerque, N.M., in 1987, where he was an anatomy professor at the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Wilcox was a biology professor for more than a decade at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he worked with cadets in various areas of research. He held multiple patents and started two thriving research startups, Lamina Systems and Aqueous Biomedical in Colorado Springs. He served as president of Falcon Works, a technology and research incubator for new innovations in Colorado Springs.

Dr. Wilcox was happiest when he was in his lab and enjoyed working with his hands. He built models of ships in his youth and when his sons were young; later, he brewed beer. He was always reading and enjoyed discussing current events.

Dr. Wilcox is survived by two sons, Christopher (and wife Jenni and their son Erik) and Marc Wilcox, of Albuquerque, NM; a daughter, Joanna (and husband Corey and their son Casey) Allhands of Gilbert, AZ; his former wife, Claudie Zamet-Wilcox of Albuquerque, NM; a sister, Diane (and Moh) Wilcox-Ghanoonparvar of Austin, TX; three brothers, Paul (and Becky) Wilcox of Chicago, IL; Steve (and Pam) Wilcox of Vacaville, CA; and Al Wilcox of Vacaville, CA; and six nieces and nephews, Adam Wilcox, Sarah Lewis, Mina Lehmann, Tara Burd, Christine Wilcox and Danny Wilcox.

A private remembrance of Dr. Wilcox's life is planned in southern Colorado. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Wilcox's name to Falcon Works. To donate, please visit https://goo.gl/pXiClE or contact Mary Fox at (719) 439-3795 or [email protected].

Dr. Wilcox, you will forever be a part of me. You were an amazing mentor, and I am so grateful for the time you spent with me in and out of the lab. I thank God for the few short years I was able to work and learn next to you. "Here's a toast..." my friend!

Mike, I would always find you working on Sunday afternoon in the lab. You were one of the most brilliant scientists I have ever met. I was blown away by your fly eye research and the patent you developed to shunt fluid in the eye to relieve pressure and help those with glaucoma. You just loved working with cadets and were a wonderful mentor dedicated to their learning. I will always remember your friendship and the world you opened up for me.

Mike, thank you for being a good friend and colleague. I am grateful that I was privileged to know you and work with you for several years. Your kindness and insights helped me a lot. You were one of the brightest and most enthusiastic people I have ever known. I hope you have a great lab in heaven and many colleagues with whom to share ideas. You will be greatly missed.
