Nancy Edwards Obituary

Nancy Edwards was born August 17, 1926, at the New Jersey Medical Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. She passed on to her next adventure on February 10, 2016 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

At age 20, she was the executive secretary to the editor of the Beacon Press in Boston. She met the great love of her life, Dr. James E. Edwards at a Harvard Halloween party. He was captivated by her stunning good looks and charm. After one date, she was injured in an equestrian accident and spent years learning to walk and talk again. James saw her through it all and they wed in 1951 in Morgantown, West Virginia. Much to her doctors' surprise, her physical disabilities did not keep her from having children. Once she sampled motherhood, she developed a very serious addiction to parenting and delivered 10 more children in 14 years. Her husband accepted an internship at Penrose Hospital and they moved west to Colorado Springs in 1955. Though she could only walk slowly, her mind was quick. She treated the TV as a controlled substance and insisted that her children always spend their time improving their minds. She spent countless hours sharing with her children her love of music by teaching individual piano lessons. A great supporter of the arts, she was a devoted attender of the symphony, opera and ballet and instilled in her children love of the classical arts. Attendance at Grace Episcopal Church was always important for her family and she attended that institution most of her adult life. Nancy was passionate about several causes. She fought against the strip mining on the Front Range, was the president of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award from Governor Lamm for her work with students with autism at Horace Mann Junior High School. She was welcoming to all and insisted on no doorbell so that all friends could just walk in the house. She welcomed single mothers into her home for months or years at a time to help them get on their feet.

Nancy was preceded to glory by her son, Joseph, who passed away as an infant. She is survived by her husband, James, her sister Virginia (Penny) Devaney, her children Ellen Miller, Bill, John, Jim, Mike, Nancy Brouillette, Robert, Barbara Barker, Debora Kovensky, and David. She also has 28 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Memorial Services are scheduled for April 2nd, at 11:00 am at St. George's Anglican Church, 217 East Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

What a great parent Nancy was - many children and much juggling of them as I remember from Cragmor. Condolences to Ellen and the rest of the family. May Nancy rest finally in peace.
