Nancy Jean Herzog passed away on Sunday November 30, 2025, in Colorado Springs, after complications from Alzheimer's Disease. She is survived by her life partner, Sallie Gallegos, her dog Lilo, her sister Betty Kendall, nieces and nephews, and many loving friends.
Nancy was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa on July 17, 1945, to Harold and Phyllis Herzog as the "baby of the family" with a brother and two sisters. It was in her hometown of Ledyard, Iowa where she excelled in all things education, music, and athletics. In 1967 she earned a degree in education/physical education from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. She then devoted her adult life to being an educator and champion for at risk youth.
Nancy served in key positions in Colorado Springs District 11, Zebulon Pike Detention Center and Spring Creek Detention Center. Along the way Nancy earned a Masters in Special Education. She retired in 2004 as Principal and was awarded "Colorado Outstanding Educator" with a ceremony at the Colorado Governor's Masion. Her devotion and commitment to her students and profession made her a star among her peers.
Nancy loved the great outdoors and enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, snow shoeing, hiking and traveling to the beach with her partner Sallie. She loved animals and had many dogs. She loved birds and squirrels and created a beautiful sunflower garden where she hung multiple bird feeders for the birds in her backyard.
Nancy was a gifted photographer and learned to do woodwork in her retirement years. Her photography was breathtaking and her skills in woodworking produced extraordinary, detailed wood carvings.
Nancy was an avid golfer who enjoyed hitting the links with friends and playing on leagues at Patty Jewett. In her younger years she trained as a lifeguard, played softball on several women's teams and basketball in high school and college years where she was recognized with awards at the state level.
Nancy was a unique and special person who never knew a stranger, deeply touched the hearts of those in her life, and showed great kindness and dedication to those she loved. Nancy's body was donated for medical research. No services are planned per Nancy's wishes.
