Nancy Oswell Obituary

Nancy Heminway Oswell, age 78, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs passed away peacefully at her home, on February 28, 2025 of Alzheimer's disease.

Nancy was bom in New York City on May 20, 1946 to Edwin and Joan Heminway of North Berwick, ME, the oldest of three daughters. Growing up in rural Maine were some of her fondest memories. She graduated from St. Mary's all girls boarding school in Bethlehem, NH in 1964. In the summer of that year, she met and fell in love with Barry Oswell, then a junior at Boston University. After Barry graduated from college and completed Air Force OTS, they married in Danbury, CT on May 6, 1967. As an Air Force officers wife, they moved 9 times and lived in 13 different houses, the last being the Air Force Academy where her husband was stationed until his retirement in 1990. After his retirement her husband spent 20 years in the financial services industry which allowed them to pursue their passion for traveling.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband, Barry, of 57 years, and two of her three children, Mark Oswell of Silver Spring, MD, and Heather Smith of Colorado Springs. She is preceded in death by their son, CW3 Scott Oswell, an Army helicopter pilot who was killed on his second tour in Iraq in 2007 and Jude Riley Smith, a baby boy born to their daughter, who died shortly after birth in 2002.

Nancy's accomplishments were many and her entire life was dedicated to service to others. She was a driver for Meals on Wheels for 30 years, and was very active in her church where she was president of the Episcopal Church Women at St Michael's Episcopal Church for many years, earning the Order of St. Michael and the St. George award, a national award for service to youth. She also served on the board of the Air Force Academy Officers Wives Club, and with Family Services. She was also very active in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, serving in various roles and earned numerous awards through her decades of service. Nancy always put her family, friends and service to others as her priority in life. She was an amazing woman who many have described as vivacious and a power house. The Colorado Springs and St Michael's Church communities have been enriched because of her involvement. She will be sorely missed.

Services will be held at St Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church, 7400 Tudor Road Colorado Springs, CO at 10AM on March 29th, 2025.

I knew Nancy and Barry during the 13 years I lived in Colorado Springs. She was always very helpful at our New Year's parties. She was also very thoughtful and gave me a pin I still have and wear. Peggy (Forster) Garrison
