Dr. Nathan S. Trookman, beloved physician and mentor, dies at 58

Dr. Nathan S. Trookman, a brilliant physician and treasured mentor, died unexpectedly on October 27, 2025, at the age of 58. Nate was beloved by his family, his extended family of partners and staff, his patients and the greater Colorado Springs community. "Dr. T" will be remembered for his clinical expertise, excellent care, and his wicked sense of humor and practical jokes.
Born in 1967 in Phoenix, Arizona, Nate dedicated his life to his family, patients and colleagues. A gifted student, he graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in Dermatology at the University of Arizona. He fell in love with Colorado the first time he visited and promptly claimed it as his home. He was the cherished managing partner at Colorado Springs Dermatology for over 30 years.
Outside of his professional life, Nate's greatest joy was his role as husband and father. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Carrie, sons Jake, Matt and Ben, and his ambassador-partner poodle Lily, who accompanied him to visit patients and staff at local hospitals. He is also survived by his mother, Sandra Trookman, and sister Debbie Trookman (Phoenix, AZ), in-laws Kelvin and Carolyn Hecht (Avon, CT), brothers-
and sisters-in-law Charles and Robyn Hecht (Needham, MA), Jennifer and Eric Leventhal (Rye, NY), nephews Alex and Jason, Aunt Barbara, Aunt Penny, and his many adored cousins who were his childhood best friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Trookman, and his niece Danielle Leventhal.
Funeral services will be held Thursday October 30 at 11:00 am at Temple Shalom, 1534 E. Monument Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.

Oh No, I'm STUNNED - I went on line to get the office number and see about scheduling a periodic skin cancer screen as I have done over the past 25 years. Way to soon for one of the best joke tellers around to be taken from us. A great carrying doctor day after day, year after year. An AWESOME good person. Dr Nate will be missed. I'm so sorry and my condolences to family and friends.

My very first encounter with Dr. T was warm and welcoming. Never had I experienced a doctor taking the time to break the ice with a point of common connection. For us it was Harvard University, where he had gone to medical school and where I had worked. Our time there had overlapped. I was stunned to learn that he recently passed away and I can only imagine the sadness of his family, colleagues, and beloved friends at this incredibly raw and tender time. He was truly special and will be missed.

Dr. Trookman was a wonderful human being. Not only was he my doctor for 30 years, the longest relationship that I have ever had with a physician, but over all those years developed a friendship that was genuine and real. He ended up treating my wife, daughter and grandson because he was held in such high regard by me. To his family, we grieve with you as well as all his staff and peers at Colorado Springs Dermatology. We share your profound sense of loss. God Speed, Nate.

Dr. Trookman saw me through the scariest time in my life. With half my face riddled with melanoma, he held my hand through it all and gave me life changing scar reduction treatments at no charge when my insurance turned down the expense. He said no one should go through life with a scarred up face from cancer. He truly was a philanthropist; kind, loving and always supportive. I am heartbroken. Peace be with him and his family

I was so saddened to hear about Dr. Trookman! I first met Doc when he started in the Cañon City office. As the years passed I think he enjoyed finding a gentle phrase to tell me I was aging! He was a great doctor and he felt like a friend. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye! Min haShamayim Tenuhamu.

I first met Nate when I worked in the Education Dept at St. Thomas More Hospital, Canon City, Colorado, where I assisted with video appointments for rural clients who couldn't make it into town. He was always so nice, made the client feel at ease, and was always attentive to the clients' needs. I reconnected just a couple of months ago when he treated some pre-cancerous spots on my face. Always the consummate professional. As a patient, I'm also incredibly glad for the diagnosis and immediate care he provided. He touched many lives. I will not forget your kindness and care, sir.
Sending my deepest condolences. May God rest your soul and watch over your family and co-workers now and always. ~Amen

Dr. Nate Trookman was a highly respected colleague among Colorado´s dermatologists. He was my trusted referral for patients seeking care in Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado. Throughout his decades-long service as a Volunteer Faculty member at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, he was a dedicated teacher and mentor to many medical students who were fortunate to learn from him.

My sincere condolences go out to his physician partners, his patients, and most importantly, his wife and children. Dr. Trookman´s legacy of compassion, expertise, and mentorship will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and work with him.

I moved to Colorado Springs from Europe in the late 1990s and went to see Dr. Trookman initially in 2002 for my dermatology concerns and then brought along my teenaged daughter for hers. He made us feel seen and understood. Dr. T. was sincerely the best out of all the multiple specialists I have seen in this city across the spectrum in all the years I have lived here and I trusted his guidance and advice implicitly. Our family felt safe in his hands. We were shocked and deeply, deeply saddened to hear of his unexpected passing. Our sincere condolences go out to Dr. T´s beloved family, his friends, colleagues and fellow patients. May his memory always be an eternal blessing.

Just heard today of Dr. Trookman's passing. We are so terribly sad and want to wish the best for his family. We, my husband and I, were his patients from the time we moved to Canon City in the mid 90's. Always so friendly and thorough with his examination. Sometimes would take care of our spots in the office, and would send us to the Pueblo or Springs office if they needed more attention. Will miss him very much. Many blessings to your family.

To Dr. Trookman´s Family,

I want you to know how much Dr. Trookman meant to me. Before I met him, my health had been poor for many years. It was hard for me to do even the simplest things, including taking care of my babies. I had no real quality of life and couldn´t find a doctor who truly understood or cared for me the way I needed - until I met Dr. Trookman.

He told me I deserved to have a better quality of life and began treating my medical needs with compassion and dedication. For the past 15-16 years, he has cared for me, listened to me, and helped me regain my health. Because of him, I have been able to do so many more things than I ever could before, and I feel like myself again.

Dr. Trookman was truly my hero. I loved him dearly and will miss him deeply. My heart aches for all of you, and you are in my thoughts and prayers. My family has always been so grateful to Dr. Trookman for doing what other doctors wouldn´t - for giving me back my life.

May God give you peace and comfort during this difficult time.
God bless you all.

With heartfelt sympathy

Dr. Trookman was one of the kindest doctors to our family. He was genuinely compassionate and always willing to listen to concerns, providing solutions with ease. During my teenage years, I struggled with severe acne, which led to ridicule from peers. Dr. Trookman reassured me that with patience, the issue would be resolved, and things would improve. His expertise was remarkable. Notably, he successfully diagnosed my aunt's skin cancer, enhanced my mother's self-esteem, and provided care to numerous family members. May Dr. Trookman rest in peace. We are grateful for his dedication to our family's well-being.

I had no idea that the service was today and it breaks my heart that I wasn´t there. I celebrate him as a physician and as a mentor for my son Rory who did a rotation with him last summer. We have been patients of his since the time we moved here I believe in 1998.
He fixed skin issues that my three boys had that I had and my husband had in such a matter of fact way. I certainly don´t want to be more upset than his beautiful wife, Carrie and his children but I gotta tell you this one has been a hard hit. He and I talked about Croatia because I was on my way there and he was thinking about going on a bike trip. I met you years ago Carrie through Lora Vanwagenen I think and I´m not sure if you remember but I certainly do. You did a good job with your man and I know that you were certainly a reason why he was so successful. He was fun and funny and really kind to me and my kids when we saw him. He treated me like an equal even though I was just a nurse with less education. The header on this site says memories and condolences for Nathan Truman. So I gave you some memories and I don´t think he needs any condolences because I´m pretty sure he´s really OK
Sending you and your children intentions of peacefulness

Nate and Carrie were one of the first couples to welcome my daughter Lauren and I to Temple Shalom and include us in some Jewish high holiday celebrations to help make this very small Jewish community feel bigger. He gave great advice as a physician especially to my daughter that would not take the same advice from me. He did not just give advice for the now but also for the future.
