Neil Utz Obituary

Neil Utz
November 12, 1943
March 20, 2025

Neil Utz, 81, of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, after bravely battling prostate cancer. He was born on Nov. 12, 1943, in Wichita, Kansas and spent his youth in Plains, Kansas. For the majority of his life, however, Neil lived in the beautiful state of Colorado, where he developed a deep love for its mountains and natural beauty.
Neil was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Schooler, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage. They were best friends and found joy together in everyday activities, from skiing and biking to hiking the rugged trails of Colorado's mountain towns. They travelled extensively, including yearly trips to Mexico with their family. Neil also leaves behind his children, Katie, Ryan, Jessica, and Kendall, as well as his six cherished grandchildren.
As a young man, Neil was one of the earliest troops to be sent to Vietnam. Upon returning, he was able to continue his college education with the help of the GI Bill.
He became a committed educator for 20 years in Colorado Springs School District 11. He served as a PE and classroom teacher. He also coached junior high and high school volleyball. After teaching, he became the area director for Special Olympics Colorado for eight years. Special Olympians always held a special place in his heart.
In addition to his work in education and sports, Neil was an avid athlete. He loved playing volleyball, running marathons (including 12 Pikes Peak Marathons), golfing, and taking weeklong backpacking trips with his "buddies". Later in life, he became an enthusiastic reader. Neighbors often saw him sitting on his front porch, engaged in a good book.
Neil's greatest accomplishment was being a devoted father and grandfather. He showed love and support to his family every single day, and his legacy of kindness, laughter, and love will live on in them.
A celebration to honor Neil's life will be held at The Pinery at the Hill on May 4, 2025 from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to the following organizations: Friends of Monument Valley Park, Palmer Land Conservancy, Pikes Peak Hospice, or Special Olympics Colorado.
Neil will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His warmth, humor, and loving spirit will continue to inspire those who loved him.
