Nelson Kamuf Obituary

Nelson Charles Kamuf, age 86, passed away at his home in Colorado Springs on Sept. 9,2006. He was born Dec 26,1919 in Cleveland, OH, the son of Charles and Anna Kamuf. Nelson grew up in Cleveland and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University. He served in the Navy as a Lieutenant in the Sea Bees during World War II in Tarawa, Kwajalein and after surviving an airplane crash into the ocean, he was sent back to Hawaii to recover. During his stay he became friends with home builder William Levitt, who was later to have a significant influence on his career. After the war, Nelson was City Engineer for the City of East Cleveland until 1950 when Bill Levitt asked him to join Levitt and Sons in New York, and was then involved in directing the development of Levittowns in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Paris, Puerto Rico, Teheran, and Williamsburg, FL as Senior Vice President in charge of Operations. In 1971 he joined Golden Cycle Corporation as Chief Operating Officer of its land subsidiary Golden Cycle Land Corporation involved in the development of Rockrimmon and Cripple Creek Mountain Estates. Nelson became a member of the Broadmoor Golf Club so that he could pursue his lifelong love of the game. He also like to do a little fishing in the streams and lakes of Colorado. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth, sons Rodger and James, daughter Peggy, and sister Esther Grimshaw. He was very proud of his granddaughter Kim Fawcett (Richard) of Fairfield, CT and his grandson Rodger Jr. (Alison) of Tampa, FL and his six great-grandchildren, Kylie, Cassidy and Nicholas Fawcett and Jada Madelyn, and Avery Kamuf. Services will be held to celebrate his life at the Broadmoor Community Church on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2:00 pm.
