Nelva Cunningham entered her heavenly home on November 15, 2025 after a long and full life. She was born to Henry and Lena Keunen in Sioux County Iowa. A resident of Colorado Springs for most of her life, Nelva worked as an administrative assistant in various organizations. She enjoyed church activities, travel, jigsaw puzzles and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard Keunen and Cornie Keunen; and by three husbands, George Van Zyl, Galen De Valois and Jay Cunningham.
She is survived by three children, Scott (Kim) Van Zyl, Jane (Buddy) Knight and Lisa (Bruce) Smith; seven stepchildren; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place on December 5 at 4 p.m. at Evangel Christian Academy Elementary Chapel, 2511 N. Logan Ave.

Earlier today
Nelva was a sweet friend and a blessing to me in many ways over many years of knowing her. She gave me encouragement and guidance during my years as secretary at Grace Presbyterian Church, a position she had held some years before. We shared a connection to Northwestern College and northwest Iowa, and she encouraged me when I was newly widowed. I treasure memories of our friendship and send heartfelt condolences to her family.
