Nina Haeckel Obituary

Nina Nell Haeckel Nov 24, 1955 – July 11, 2007. Nina Nell Haeckel, age 51, passed from this life at her home with her loving husband and son by her side on Wednesday, July 11, 2007. Nina Nell was born to Eldon and Josephine (May) Sutherland in Windsor, Missouri. She was beloved by those who knew her and enjoyed reading, traveling, electronic games, and being involved in all aspects of her family. She was a devoted loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and most of all a terrific "Grammy". She had just completed course work and a teaching assistanceship at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for her Master's Degree in English Literature. She married Ronald J. Haeckel on April 30, 1977, who survives her along with her two beloved children; daughter, Alexis (Brian) Herr; son, Jon Haeckel; and one grandson, Ethan; mother, Josephine Sutherland; three brothers, Jack Sutherland, Dale Sutherland, and Mont Sutherland. Memorial Services will be held at a later date in her home state of Missouri, and one at the Peterson Air Force Base Chapel later in August. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory are asked that donations be made in her name to the American Cancer Society. Blessed be her memory.

I was Nina´s debate partner at Marshall High School in Marshall, Missouri. Through that, we became boyfriend/girlfriend. My time with Nina was some of the very best time of my life. She was beautiful, kind, smart, and I have such vivid and wonderful memories of her. I did not keep in touch after leaving Marshall for college, and I regret that deeply. Over the last several years I have tried, without success, to locate Nina through internet searches. Only tonight did I locate this page, and learn that she passed years ago. I am truly devastated. Even after 50 years of no contact, I am so sad and sorry that I will never have the chance to reconnect. I hope Nina´s family will find peace and cherish her memory. I will never forget the wonderful person I had the brief opportunity to know.

I was on the Marshall High School (Marshall Missouri) debate team with Nina. She was sharp, well spoken, quick of mind, very pretty, funny, bright, and she had a presence in that she just glowed with positive energy. Just a joy to be with and do things. For whatever reason, I got the sense she would be a lawyer and/or do something in communication. I know she wanted to be a mom and she liked children.

As the years passed, and got several undergrad and graduate degrees, then I served around the world with the Navy fleet and then Marine Corps Air Wings, then with the VA, as Kansas City Federal Executive Board Member, as a international missionary, and then pastor, I wondered what she was doing, because whatever Nina put her focus to she always did exceptionally well. I found out this evening (17Jun22), that she was listed as one of the passed on members of the MHS Class of 1973. And that she was gone already 15 years. She was gone way too soon.

I am grateful for having had the experience of crossing paths with her as an adolescent, being on the same team as her, of her friendship, of knowing her bright spirit, of sharing at times both tears of both joy and sorrow, success and it´s opposite, I remember her kind brown eyes, they smiled! and her smile on top of that smile! I even remember her scent (um, some 70s something).

Remember, life is a continuum, and while gone from here, her spirit is forever young, and for her, like us, life goes on.

To them that called her wife, mom, friend...
I know how blessed you were and are!
So treasure those memories,
and make new good ones for...her...
Because your success and joy,
is what she lived for, and lives... still...

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends. I am saddened by the news of Nina Nell's passing. I only knew her for two years, but I fondly recall her walking into my office in the English Department to chat or share news about her grandson. She will be deeply missed.

I just met Nina Nell two years ago when we were both in the M.A. program at UT and worked on a research project together. No matter how badly my day was going, I could look to her to provide a smiling face and positive attitude (which is nearly impossible to do in graduate school). My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
