Orio Palmer Obituary

Letter to a Father

Orio Joseph Palmer, 45, a 20-year veteran of the New York Fire Department, was the battalion chief of Engine Company 3 and Ladder 12 in Chelsea. He lived in Valley Stream, N.Y., with his wife, Debbie, and their three children, Dana, 14, Keith, 12, and Alyssa, 9. Dana wrote a letter to him in her journal. Here are excerpts:

"Dear Dad,

"A friend gave me the idea of writing to you. She said it might help. Oh, how I wish you could write back, or I could hear your voice again, or see you — even if it's just a quick glimpse. I hate knowing that you're really not coming home this time, and all I remember about when I saw you last was that I was doing my homework when I got up and kissed you goodbye. I didn't know it would be forever, though.

"When I was listening to all your favorite music the other day, I thought I would feel sad and I'd miss you. But instead, I felt closer to you, and it was quite comforting because there's not one time that I can remember when you didn't have the radio on. You were the music man.

"Always know that you're my hero. I could never compare any man to you because that would be unfair to him. For, like Keith said, you're one of a kind — the very best there is out there.

"My birthday is coming up, but I'm sure you already knew that. It won't be the same without you, and I'm not really looking forward to it. I feel that way about a lot of things, though. I would do anything to have you back.

"Love always,

Dana"

Every year around the anniversary of 9/11 I always watch all the documentaries related to the event because I never want to forget and in my own way it’s my tribute to remember the heroes and the fallen. Orio is one who always stands out to me. What amazing courage he had to do what he did. It is so heartbreaking to know he was so close to saving so many when time simply ran out for all of those poor souls. Still he represents the best of us and every single American should honor his courage and sacrifice.

I am so thankful to know that I will one day see Orio in heaven to give him a big hug for everything he's done here on earth! After reading his memorial page on the 9/11 Living Memorial and seeing all the pictures there, I can see how loved he was and how he was so genuine. Taking the neighborhood kids fishing and teaching them how to play stick ball on top of being a husband, father, firefighter, friend and all the other hats he wore while living true to his motto, "Live while you are alive". What an incredible man to remember, always!

Orio Palmer is a true hero. Seeing how selfless Orio was in his quest to save others, is truly inspiring. He was the type of person you rarely come across. I read that his wife passed this year. I hope they are both at peace, together in heaven.

Orio Palmer was one of the true heroic people who was featured in a World Trade Center September 11th video that I had noticed as on the 20th Anniversary of September 11th I had noticed on the internet that there are many videos of some of the amazing wonderful heroes that were featured in some of the September 11th morning and Orio Palmer was one of the great men who risked everything to help other people who were literally stuck and trapped in the World Trade Center as I noticed that Orio had went into the South Tower of the World Trade Center and it was told in the video that Orio could only get to the 40th because the elevator could not go past the 40th floor due to the steel beams that were bending from the heat that had caused the elevator to malfunction and stop working so in the video a guy doing the narration of the video had said that because Orio could no longer use the elevator and being that the elevator stopped and got jammed on the 40th floor Orio had climbed up and he went on foot physically while wearing his 45 to 50 pound rescue squad uniform and he hiked up nearly another 40 floors on foot physically in a smokey filled over heated stairwell and the guy doing the narration of the video said that Orio made it all the way up to the 78th floor on foot. This right here is a true amazing man who was a very heroic man by making it all the way up to the 78th floor in the South Tower of the World Trade Center and it was mentioned in the video that Orio was a man in great shape and that he ran many marathons and was use to running for a long time and maintaining his energy and that is why Orio could do what he did by making it all the way up to the 78th floor in those horrific terrifying conditions. Nobody could ever do or have that kind of strength and energy like Orio did on that horrible September 11th morning as Orio was a very extra special man to have spent his last moments of his life trying to save other people in the South Tower on the 78th floor of The World Trade Center on September 11th of 2001 which was a clear blue sky sunny beautiful Tuesday morning. In the video they showed Orio Palmer’s father who said that could you imagine what the people who were completely stuck and trapped on the 78th floor in the South Tower of The World Trade Center thought when all those trapped people saw Orio Palmer arrive in person in his rescue squad uniform?! Orio’s father said that all those people who saw Orio making it to the 78th floor and a real live rescue squad uniformed man made those trapped people happy and that Orio gave those trapped people hope that they would make it out alive including Orio and Orio’s father also mentioned that when all those people who were trapped on the 78th floor had seen Orio in his rescue uniform the trapped people must have been elated and thrilled to see that a live man in a rescue uniform had finally arrived on the 78th floor to help save and rescue the people who were trapped in The South Tower of the World Trade Center but unfortunately the unthinkable happened as just as Orio arrived on the 78th floor of The South Tower of the World Trade Center the entire South Tower of The World Trade Center collapsed and sadly all the people on the 78th floor that Orio was trying to save including Orio himself did not make it out alive which was completely devastating. This definitely was a one of a kind type of guy as Orio has left a very impressive lasting impression and it is so depressing that Orio passed away trying to help save the lives of other people. I know for sure that there is a very special place in Heaven for Orio who died while trying to save the lives of other people. Orio is a definite Saint

I think of my family and I’m reminded again how much you missed and how much they missed. All these years later, your passing still jars me in an very emotional way.

I grew up in Woodlawn, went to Spellman a few years behind you, and hung out in McGinns. We were friendly though age difference made friendship unlikely. But you always had time for a quick hello, a laugh, and a comment on my preoccupation with Springsteen.

Over the years, I’ve met a few kids who lost their dads that day. They are amazing kids. I’m sure yours are as well. Hard to believe twenty years has gone by. The kids are grown up and your Woodlawn friends aren’t spring chickens any more. There’s more golf than schoolyard football. And we ache just as much after!

Just wanted to say hello

Thinking of the Palmer Family at this time and thankful for the picture Agnes drew of Orio that I have a copy of. Commemorating a hero and never forgetting his sacrifice is important for society and all of us so that we know there are always protectors out there among us who care about the lives of others and are willing to give up theirs to help others. Orio was one of those elite protectors. Thank you Agnes and Orio's family for your sacrifice as well.

Hero

Oh, the hero comes
His footsteps beat like drums
Willingly marching toward the kingdom come
Through the blazing firelight
His heart ignites to the call

Oh, climb up above
Pay the ultimate price
In the name of love
Be the sacrifice
A single man will stand and fight
His back to the wall

He treads unbroken into the danger
The inferno's rhythm has never been calmer
His last breath spent to save a complete stranger
A hero who will never return

I'm so proud of every firefighter on 911 they sacrificed so much to help others they didn't even know. People everywhere remember Orio as a hero how comforting it must have been for those people to just see him on that day I can't even imagine. He will never be forgotten.

September 28, 2015

Mr. Palmer,

For the past couple of weeks in my US History class, we have been learning about the events of 9/11. At the conclusion of our unit, we were asked to present on the unacknowledged heroes of that day. After researching the sacrifices of many people, your father's contributions particularly stood out to us. We wanted to write to you and show our appreciation for him not leaving behind those that were in need of help and comfort.

Part of what was asked of us by our teacher, necessitated us to design a memorial that best commemorates our idol. My partner and I were so moved by your father's story, that we decided to create the floorplans for a statue in his honor. The statue would consist of four stairs leading up to a glass box with a huge candle inside. On the side of the box would be a black and white picture of him in his work gear. The box would have music playing from it to represent his love for dancing and his nickname, Music Man. There would be a smaller box on top of the first(with a slit in it) so that people can write notes to your father, or give donations. There would be four plaques (surrounding the donation box) sharing basic information about him. Jacaranda trees would be planted around the memorial to represent your father's beautiful soul. We feel that this plan would be the most complete, and well thought out way to commemorate Orio Palmer's life, and guarantee that he is never forgotten.

We were too young to remember the tragic occurrences. However, after digging deep into your father's story, for the first time we can apprehend the sentiment of sorrow we see on our elder's faces when they talk about that day. Although 9/11 was a terrible day, it was people such as Orio Palmer that showed America's heroism and bravery. He set the precedent for how we want to live the rest of our lives. With skill, compassion, bravery, and love.

Thank you for your time,

Jayda Fritz and Allison Lee

Just recently heard a recording from 9/11 that included voices of some of the lost firefighters. After hearing Orio's voice, 9/11 felt personal for the first time in 14 years. He showed tremendous courage while ascending each flight, and his presence brought peace and comfort to many in their final moments. Orio will always be remembered as a true hero.

There were hundreds of heroes on Sept 11, but Mr. Palmer was THE GUY. He arrived, sized it up, had the moxie and skill to fix a broken elevator, rode up to 41, then ran up 37 flights and dove into the job of calming chaos, reporting facts and instantly formulating a plan of action, and courageously attacked the worst fire in NYC history.

Why Hollywood wastes time on super-hero movies is beyond me: just do a great film filled with the truth of Mr. Palmer's life and actions 14 years ago.

Though I did not know you personally, I knew about you from family who are related to you. I can relate somewhat to what a "firefighter" is all about. My Dad was a Captain on our Dept. for over 30 yrs. You all are very very special people. You run in, when others are fleeing, you put your own life aside to save others. My Dad once told me, when a "firefighter" dies in the line of duty, a little piece of all brothers die. God Bless you and the hundreds of other brave firefighters for what you all did on that tragic day. YOU are truly a hero. God bless your family.

I'll never forget the first time I heard about you and your heroism. Just watching you in the documentary, you compelled my soul. Your fate unbeknownst to you, you continue with such courage and determination to save as many people as you can. I'm am so proud that our FDNY have men like you. You and your "brothers" make NY and our nation the best. I'm proud to be an American because of a man like you. I'm sure that your family are proud of your heroism.
