Oscar Iobst Obituary

Oscar T. Iobst died peacefully on August 31, 2008, at his home in Colorado Springs, CO at the age of 85. He was born in Emaus, PA on December 22, 1922 to Oscar and Ruby Iobst. He is survived by his wife, Maggie, his daughter Sheila Shinn and son-in-law Reverend Mark Shinn of Philadelphia, PA. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Andrew Shinn and wife, Irina, of Seattle, WA, Alexander Shinn of Nara, Japan, Juliana Shinn-Lancello and husband, Fred, of Philadelphia, PA, Tatiana Shinn and Nina Shinn of Philadelphia, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet (Morgan) in 1991. Oscar graduated high school at the age of 16 and entered Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science immediately thereafter. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and worked as a pharmacist in the drugstore he owned in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia until his retirement. Oscar was a former U.S. Figure Skating President from 1980-83, served on the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors from 1971-1986, and as the organizations's interim executive director from 1992-93. He was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1998. He was a former national- level figure skating judge and referee in all four figure skating disciplines and was an Honorary Member of the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors, Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs, CO, as well as the Wissahickon Skating Club in Philadelphia, PA. He was best described by those who knew him as a "true gentleman." At Oscar's request, cremation will take place with no service to follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Ste. 600, Colorado Springs, CO 80903, or to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund, 20 First Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80906.

Maggie, I am so so sorry to hear about Oscar. I truly adored him, he brought such joy to USFSA at time that truly needed it. He was such a wonderful man. You two were so inspiring and I will miss him dearly.
