Otto Hilbert Obituary

Otto K. Hilbert November 10, 1932 - February 2, 2008 Otto K. Hilbert passed away February 2, 2008 at Pikes Peak Hospice. He was born in Chicago on November 10, 1932, the eldest son of Otto and Rita Hilbert. His wife of 50 years, Mary Hilbert, daughter, Mary Kay Holder, and sons, Steve and Otto, four siblings (Stuart, Fritzi, Katy and Bob) and seven grandchildren survive him. He was a devoted family man, much loved by his extended family and friends. Otto enjoyed a 50-year career in the legal profession, the first six years of which were spent in the United States Air Force as a Staff Judge Advocate. He ended his military tenure as a law professor at the Air Force Academy, then spent the balance of his career in a diverse private practice in Colorado Springs. Otto had numerous professional accomplishments, including receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award of The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Colorado in 2004. Additionally, he served as the Western Regional Director of The American Red Cross. Otto was an avid oil painter, fisherman, golfer, squash and handball player. His paintings were shown at the Hayden Hayes Gallery in an art show of Colorado painters, he fought to the top of the ladders in both squash and handball at the YMCA, and he was proud to have a hole-in-one to his credit. He also loved to travel. Otto was an All-State football player in Indiana and played football at the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated in classical literature and philosophy in 1954 and received his law degree in 1956. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2008, St. Paul's Catholic Church, 9 El Pomar Drive, Colorado Springs, CO. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pauline Chapel Restricted Fund, 9 El Pomar Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80906.

Mary, Mary Kay, Steve and Otto: I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear about Otto. I was just 21 years old when he hired me to work for him. He always told me it was because of my smile -- not because I knew anything! The first time he told me to reserve a handball court, I called the Courthouse! Guess he was right. He was such a fine person. More than anything, I respected his integrity. And through him, I met all of you, my Colorado Springs family. God bless you all and give you strength.

My warmest regards...I worked with Otto when he was a volunteer Regional Chairman for the American Red Cross so many years ago that do not seem so many years ago. He was cordial and wise and an individual I think of with a smile. I remember him fondly and salute his memory.
