Patricia Huhn Obituary

Patricia Joan Huhn was born in Philadelphia, PA, March 22, 1933 to George A. Huhn, III and Mary Walsh Kennedy. With a Master Degree from Marywood College, Scranton, PA, she joined the Order of Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, serving as a teacher. Leaving the Convent after 29 years, she continued her teaching career and ministry of service to the poor in lay community, including in Wisconsin, Idaho and Arizona, where she was Principal of the Mennonite Mission School at the Hopi Reservation, and in Trinidad Colorado where she was Professor of English and Journalism at Trinidad State Jr. College. Upon retirement she moved to Colorado Springs, and taught English part time at Pikes Peak Community College. Pat was Mayor of Cokedale, Colorado, helped start a free Soup Kitchen for the homeless and a Safe House for abused women and children. In Colorado Springs she served on Colorado Springs Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission's Middle East Peace Project, the Bijou Peace Community, Citizens for Peace in Space, and Pax Christi. She was awarded the State of Colorado Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award in 1998, and attended Catholic, Quaker and Mennonite religious services. Pat died on December 29, 2012 while visiting her brother and family in Florida. She is survived by her brother, John Michael Huhn (wife Suzanne P.), one nephew, three nieces, John M. Jr., Suzanne E., Patricia J., Tina M., three grand nephews, John M., III, Michael; and Christopher and two grand nieces, Jill and Beverly. A memorial gathering will take place Saturday, February 2 at 2:00 PM at the Colorado Springs Friends Meetinghouse, 950 E. Cimarron. Memorial contributions should be sent to the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission.
