Paul Bacalis Obituary

Major General Paul N. Bacalis beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on February 9 2016 in his home in Monument Colorado. He was born in Norfolk , Virginia on November 24, 1919. He was the third of five boys born to Nicholas and Helen Bacalis.

Following his graduation from Maury High School in 1938, he attended William and Mary college for three Years. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp as an aviation cadet in December 1941, graduated and received his pilot wings and commission as a second lieutenant in August1942. General Bacalis served in the USAF for over 31 years was promoted to Major General in 1970 and retired in 1973. During his career he amassed over 8,000 flight hours and completed 50 combat missions during World War II. Among his many military decorations are the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Following his retirement he moved to Colorado and remained active in support of the Air Force and the Air Force Academy. During his retirement years Paul was a member of the Falcon Foundation and the Monument Hill Sertoma Club.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 73 years, Phyllis, sons Paul and Perry (Maria) seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one brother as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday March 4 at 12:00 Noon at Saint Matthias Episcopal Church in Monument Colorado followed by a reception at Woodmoor Country Club. General Bacalis will be Interred at Arlington National Cemetary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice.

My dear Chuck Ward passed 2011 and the one time he cried was hearing mistakenly that Bacalis had died before him. These were the great men of our history. Contact Margarita Ward 562-881-6606 Cookie will answer. We all share the memories of their lives.
