PAULA JEAN COOPER
November 2, 2019
Paula Jean Cooper, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on November 2, 2019, after a brief but spirited fight against ovarian cancer. She was 86 years old.
Paula was born in 1933, the second of two daughters to Bernard Frank Cooper and Wilhelmina Chevalier Dawes. She grew up in Palos Verdes Estates, CA, where she enjoyed riding her horse bareback, her hair flying behind her in the breeze, a study of joy and abandon. She later attended the University of Redlands, San Diego State University, and UCCS where she earned a Bachelor and two Masters degrees.
Paula met Robert Steinbach at the University of Redlands and they married in 1954; together they raised three children, Brad, Sue and Laura. Paula taught her children to appreciate the outdoors, classical music and cultural diversity. Paula and Robert divorced in 1969 but remained friends for another 50 years. In her later years, her decade-long companion Tony Raitz captivated her heart with a shared love of dance, golf and history until his recent death on June 22, 2019.
Throughout her life Paula was a passionate educator, beginning as an elementary school educator, combining her love of music and education through establishing a youth orchestra at Peyton elementary school in CO in the mid-1970s. In her 50s, Paula became a special education teacher and was recognized many times for her work with developmentally disabled individuals with autism.
Yet even beyond education, the love of Paula's life was music performance. She excelled at the cello, performing in the San Diego Symphony, the Tri-Cities Symphony Orchestra, Walla Walla Symphony and the Colorado Springs Symphony. She continued to teach cello and piano to private music students until two weeks before her death. She held a deep love for her students, many of whom became her beloved friends.
Paula was cherished by her friends and family for her compassion for the under privileged, her generosity towards perfect strangers, her razor-sharp intellect, and her 1000-watt smile. She was a fierce advocate for racial equality and women's rights, outspoken on both topics. She also loved dancing, gardening, golfing and bird watching, and single-handedly constructed a small sanctuary in her backyard for chickens, rabbits, squirrels and birds. She was known for her deep and abiding heart connections, with both people and animals.
Paula is survived by her three children Brad Steinbach, Sue Ruzicka and Laura Steinbach along with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service in Paula's honor has not yet been scheduled. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The National Association for Music Education (https://nafme.org).

I helped your mom with maintenance on her rentals on Dale until she sold the property. We remained in touch but drifted like we do until I thought about her and found her obit. She was a great lady and I am proud to have called her a friend.

Oh my, I drove by Paula's home on 30th Street yesterday and saw a for sale sign. I tried calling her number and it was disconnected. Sadly I searched for her Obituary and found it. Paula was a friend and customer for over 40 years. I know she loved the Cello and most important her family. Rest in peace Paula.

I was so saddened to hear that Paula died. How can one get ovarian cancer late in life? I met Paula many many years ago when she lived on Dale Street. I used to walk the alleys, and I am sure that is how we met. I cleaned house for her while she lived on Dale street and could watch how she transformed her own home and the buildings across the alley. She certainly beautified that neighborhood. We kind of lost touch afterwards but a few years ago we ran into each other at King Soopers and she invited me for dinner on the spot. One more time I got to meet her was at the Bird Seed Place on Palmer Park. I am so sorry that we kind of lost touch with each other, I had assumed that I had lost her address and was not able to find her. Each time I drove by 31st street I watched to see if I could recognize the house. Only after her death did I realize that I actually did have her address. Wonderful person, generous, full of life, loved to dance, was talented in so many areas. Even my parents got to meet her when they visited me from Switzerland. My condolences to her children and extended family and all her friends. She sure made an impression on my life, so sad she is no longer here. Thank you Paula for your friendship all these years. Paula was my cello and piano instructor ....and so much more. She was my life coach, my mentor, my counselor, my beloved friend. Paula saw a potential and a beauty in me that I didn't see in myself. She taught me that it was good to take time out for a glass of wine or cup of tea and watch the birds, bunnies, squirrels and chickens in her back yard....appreciating the beauty this world has to offer. There are beautiful souls that God places in our lives to guide us and teach us and Paula's vibrant spirit will forever live in my heart. I miss her dearly......
