Peter Aage Howells, Sr Obituary

Peter Aage Christian Howells, Sr passed away on September 13, 2013 at Pikes Peak Hospice.

Peter Howells, 68, was born January 13, 1945 in Stockholm, Sweden. His mother, Gurli Larsen, was a member of the Danish Resistance in WWII where she met his father, William Howells, a member of the U.S. Army.

Peter spent his youth living in Denmark, Germany, and Albany, New York. In 1961 his family moved to Fountain, Colorado, where Peter graduated from Fountain Ft. Carson High School in 1963. Upon graduation from high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Southern Colorado State College, and obtained his Master's degree in Social Work at the University of Denver.

Peter was very proud to call Fountain his home and was involved in both the City of Fountain & El Paso County Community. Through his work with the Fountain Neighborhood Community Action program, he was appointed the Town of Fountain's first Health Officer. He also worked closely with the Catholic Diocese of Denver and St Josephs Catholic Church of Fountain, establishing programs & assisting families throughout the Fountain Valley. His professional career included work at the El Paso County Department of Human Services and the Pikes Peak Mental Health Clinic (known as AspenPointe).

After obtaining the academic credentials of MSW, ACSW, LCSW, Peter was among one of the first clinical licensed social workers to establish a private practice in the Colorado Springs area in the mid 1970s. He was appointed Chief of Social Work at Brady's Hospital, now known as Cedar Springs.

Peter was a founding partner of Family and Psychiatric Services, working there until 1997, when he retired due to complications suffered by a stroke.

Throughout his career & community involvement, Peter was active in the Pikes Peak BOCES, instrumental in the NEED Foundation, and also served on the board of the Victim's Assistance Program through the El Paso County Courts.

In addition to his career as clinical licensed social worker, Peter was a proud veteran, having served both in the Navy and the Air Force, and was a member of the American Legion, Being an active member of the Republican Party; he was involved in many political campaigns over the years.

Following his stroke, Peter continued to contribute to his community by serving on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Springs Independence Center until the fall of 2012.

Throughout his life, Peter enjoyed travelling, visiting Europe, Hawaii, Lake Powell, traveling the southwest United States, and one of his favorite places, Coronado Island, San Diego, California. He was also an avid reader, and enjoyed sitting outside in front of his house, looking towards Fountain Creek and the beautiful scenery, with his faithful red heeler, Jeanie by his side.

Peter leaves to cherish his memory his son Christian Howells; daughter Peris and son-in-law Dwayne Freeman; former wife and the mother of his children Jeri Howells; mother-in-law Margueritte Davidson; granddaughters Jordan and Jaya Freeman, and grandsons Keeton and Christian Chase Howells. Peter is also survived by siblings Gail Jones, Joanne Howells, Guy Howells, and Tracy Howells, and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many family members in Denmark.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gurli and William Howells.

Peter elected to be an eye donor upon his passing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in memory of Peter C. Howells, to Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill St, Colorado Springs, CO 80906.

A memorial service will be on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 10AM at Valley Christian Church, 14555 Link Rd, Fountain, CO.
