Peter Mindock Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we share with you the passing of Peter J. Mindock on Friday, October 14th, 2014 from complications related to his Esophageal Cancer diagnosis. His wife Claire, daughter, Aubrie and son, Austin were right by his side as he peacefully began his eternal life.

Peter was born in Crystal Falls, Michigan on July 21st, 1950 to Steve and June Mindock. He was three when his family moved to Colorado Springs. The Mindocks relished spending time as a family outdoors including skiing near their family cabin in Breckenridge and hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park where Steve was a Forest Ranger for many summers. Peter was extremely proud of summiting many fourteeners; especially when his father, Steve, daughter Aubrie and son Austin accompanied him on the climb along with his Golden Retrievers Breck and Bailey.

After graduating from Palmer High School in 1968, Peter attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins and graduated with a degree in Journalism in 1972. He furthered his education at CSU and graduated with a Masters in Speech Theory. He proudly wore the Green and Gold to express his pride to be a Ram and passionately supported his alma mater for many years, especially the athletic department.

He began his professional career teaching high school in Dundee, Illinois for one year. He returned to Colorado when offered a job at Gateway High School in Aurora. He was the girl's basketball coach and was an advisor on their award winning school newspaper. At the same time Peter wrote a weekly sports column for the Denver Post cleverly called "Com-PETE with Mindock".

While Peter never left his journalistic and teaching instincts behind his career path shifted into the finance world due to encouragement from his mentor PQ Wall. What began as dabbling in the stock market as a hobby led to guiding people through difficult financial markets and became his passion in life! He believed in the quote, "If you love what you do then you never work a day in your life". Peter loved what he did and did it well for 34 years. Ironically his most challenging year health wise was The Mindock Group's most successful year. His passion for what he would call his "precious clients" allowed them piece of mind because they knew "he always had their back." His success in the financial world did not go unnoticed. He was most proud of being recognized as a member of the "Top 1000 Advisors" in the nation by Barron's and Morgan Stanley appointing him their newest Managing Director. Many friends were clients but most clients became friends and they benefited from his voracious appetite for research and financial newspapers, which he always seemed to have in his hand.

After his family and the markets, Peter's other passion was golf. His professional success and work ethic extended to the course. In recent years, he and his wife Claire enjoyed playing golf in Hawaii but his most memorable golf experiences were in Scotland, Ireland and England. Peter had a goal to play the top 100 courses in the world and he successfully played more than half. Golfing abroad and in many of his favorite tournaments, such as his annual trip to Lake Tahoe, were highlights of his life. However, he was just as happy to come home after a hard day of work, put on his iconic bucket hat and grab his trusty putter, favorite pitching wedge and head up to the Glenmoor practice facility with his Golden Retrievers by his side to unwind. Whenever we look at the practice flag up there we will think of Peter sinking his putt and remember how happy he was to be there.

Peter is survived by his wife, Claire, of Cherry Hills Village; his daughter, Aubrie, of Littleton; his son Austin and daughter in law, Kayla Mindock of Highlands Ranch; his brother, David Mindock of Denver; his sister, Stephanie Williams and brother in law, Gary Williams; from Edgewood, New Mexico; & their children, Matthew & Elizabeth Bruff; from Centennial, who have three children; Ella, Adaire & Jack. His niece Christina DuMars, her husband Charles DuMars; from Albuquerque, New Mexico and their two sons; Henry and Mason DuMars from New Mexico.

On his wife Claire's side of the family Peter is survived by his father and mother in law; Charles and Shirley Reis of Coconut Creek, Florida. His sister in law; Nancy Alexander from San Ramon, California; and her two sons; David and Kevin Alexander of California. His sister in law; Patty O'Keefe and brother in law Patrick O'Keefe of Mahopac, New York; and their two children; Stephanie Frasier and Michael O'Keefe of New York. Lastly, his sister in law, Jeanne Girsch and brother in law, William Girsch, of Katy, Texas and their two daughters; Nicole and Kimberly Girsch of Texas.

He was predeceased by his father and mother Steve and June Mindock; of Colorado Springs and his sister in law Valerie Mindock of Denver.

Peter was an extremely generous philanthropist in his Community: In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his name to: The Colorado Uplift, or The Colorado Children's Chorale.

Claire, I saw Peter's Obituary and was so saddened to hear this. While we only see each other occasionally, I picture your bright heart, great laugh and smile, striking blonde hair, and fondly remember the matching mother and daughter dresses with Aubrey when she was a little girl in our days at Cherry Hills Village Elementary. You make a wonderful lasting impression and my heart cries for you and the kids at this time. All the best in the future. Janet Kritzer

I am sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Mindock. When he was at Gateway High School, the school paper was an award-winning marvel. I can remember him catching grief from his fellow teachers for an article or two that the paper published. He was a great role model as teacher and coach, someone I will always remember fondly. My prayers are with his family and friends.

I am so thankful that Pete came into my dear friend, Claire's, life and brought such happiness to her life and enabled her to have the family she cherishes. I am praying for Claire, Aubrie, Austin and Kayla to have strength as they move forward and know that Pete will always be with them.

I owe more to Pete Mindock than I can say. When he recommended me for a job in the Denver Post sports department in 1978, he launched me on a career that has been rich beyond imagining. And he was a great friend, an inspiring teacher, and one very cool breeze. I am so thankful that he touched my life, and I wish this moment had not come so soon.

Pete was my Journalism teacher at Gateway HS back in 1978-79 and was the faculty advisor for us as editors of the Gateway Medallion. He had a great sense of humor, and we always loved talking sports throughout the class. Pete was one of those teachers who over the many years since, was one that I always looked back to with fondness and admiration. My prayers good out to you and your family and I hope you find comfort in knowing that Pete's life impacted many.
