Phillip Martinez Obituary

Phillip went home to our Lord on November 3, 2005. He was born in Crested Butte Colorado on December 9, 1928 to Alfredo and Corina Martinez. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and two grandsons. Phillip is survived by his wife Margaret, sons James, Lee, and Fred, daughter Phyllis, three brothers, one sister, grandson Milton (Tammy) King, granddaughters Danielle, Jaymie, Carmel, and Shelley, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His joy was coaching kids in various sports but his greatest love was teaching his two sons about every day life telling them to keep fighting and never give up for what they believe in. He served his community in the army and was employed at Fort Carson for 35 years as manager of supply division. He had a heart of gold, ornery, strong willed and will be missed by many whose lives he touched. No services are planned. In lieu of flowers send donations in his memory to the Heart Association 415 N. Tejon St, Suite 201 Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

We're very sorry to learn of Phil's passing.

We used to have many, many heated arguments in Park & Rec baseball. Later, I insisted my son play on Phil's team for I knew he would get the best coaching in the city. He did!

Later, I coached against Phil and his sons. James and Lee had such talent and good coaching we could never win. Still had some good arguments though. Haven't seen Phil in a few years but I've missed him. Still will.

I believe he's just moved up to a higher league. Probably already has his team organized. He was and still is a winner.

To Mrs. Martinez, my good friend Lee, and Brother James my deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you. As a long life friend of the family, since I was a kid, I have always enjoyed the many conversations and times that I had with Mr. Martinez. He always had words of encouragement to offer and drove you to be the best person you could be no matter what the challenge or problem. That is what I will remember the most about him.

To Phillip, Goodbye for now and God bless!

To the Martinez family: as a long time family friend, I am sorry to hear about the passing of Phillip (Mr. Martinez as I addressed him). He was truly a gentleman that I deeply respected and appreciated for what he taught me about athletics and life.

He taught me not only the core skills in baseball but also taught me to believe in myself and to never give up on my dreams. He did this simply by believing in me and caring about me.

Mr. Martinez always cared about us kids more than anything and worried about himself second. This tells a lot about his character and I will always be grateful to have known him.

Love,

Randy Seeliger
