Prudence Walker
October 5, 2023

Prudence Peacock Walker (Pooie) died peacefully at home on October 5, 2023, in Colorado Springs with her son and daughter at her side.
She was a lady of boundless grace, keen mind, love of travel and an avid gardener. Pooie was born November 30, 1929, in Omaha, Nebraska to John B. Peacock and Harriet Fonda Peacock. She grew up in Omaha and graduated from Brownell Talbot School. After attending Briarcliff College, she transferred to the University of Colorado and was an enthusiastic member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She graduated with a degree in Art History in 1951 and during this time met her future husband, fellow CU student, James O. (Beno) Walker on a ski hill at Winter Park.
Beno and Prudence were married in 1952 in Omaha, and started their marriage in Casper, Wyoming. In 1955, Beno and Pooie moved to Colorado Springs where Beno and his brother Dick started Walker Brothers Lumber Company shortly after their first son, Hunt, was born. Daughter Lisa followed in 1959.
Pooie loved to play tennis, ski, hike, and work in her garden. Pooie was also an artist and enjoyed contributing to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center by serving on the Selection Committee. She and Beno took wonderful hiking trips to Italy, England, Scotland, Switzerland, and New Zealand. They were active members for many years of the Cheyenne Mountain Country Club and the Broadmoor Golf Club. Living nearby, Pooie may have held the record for a few years for the most laps walked around the Broadmoor Lake. She worked in her garden constantly, which gave her much joy and she loved being an active member of the Broadmoor Garden Club.
Pooie is survived by her son Hunt Walker (Ann) of Denver and daughter Lisa Duke (Charles) of Englewood, seven grandchildren, and one great grandson. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Beno, her sister Jayne Peacock Hall, and her daughter-in-law Carol N. Walker.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, 30 West Dale Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80903; or The Broadmoor Garden Club, c/o 1578 Gold Hill Mesa Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80905.

Hunt and Lisa,
your mom was so beloved by all of our family and gave particular cheer to my father in his last years. Lucy especially and her daughter Tallulah, adored visiting with her and visiting the playhouse. As an artist I was always impressed by her impeccable eye for beautiful things, and how she cultivated an aura of graciousness in that wonderful home. I wish we had known sooner of her passing. I only found out as one of the sibs wanted her address and so I sought it online only to find this obit. I'm sure her departure has created the difficult hole of loss that we all must learn to manage, and which time can ease but never fully recover from.

On a lighter note, CMHS class of '75 is giving it one last "umph" for a reunion, and I plan to attend (fall of 2025). This will be the first for me and the last one held. Perhaps I can get to Denver and have a visit if one or more of you are up for it. Best and all my love to everyone from Mandy and the Morrison clan.

Debbie, Thanks for your note. There may be another way to respond to your message, but not sure how to do it. The celebration is being held 11/1 at 2pm at the Cheyenne Mountain Country Club. We're so sorry to hear about your loss of Donnie. He was such a vigorous kid, I imagine he would have lived to 100!

Lisa and Hunt, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Sending my deepest sympathy to you and your families. So many great memories of our growing up years and the fun parties your mom put together! Would love to be at the memorial celebration, but it doesn't say where it is, just the time. Peace to all of you. Just FYI, Donnie passed away unexpectedly in March. Love, Debbie
