R. Dreamer Obituary

Dec. 14, 1947 - Nov. 22, 2008 Chip Dreamer passed away peacefully on November 22 after a long and valiant battle against melanoma. Born and raised in Alvo, Nebraska to Ralph and Katherine Dreamer, Chip went on to earn his B.A. in Journalism in 1974 from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He went on to a 30-year career as a Television & Video Producer/Director. His lifelong passion for baseball as both a player and a fan led him to change careers in 1994, when he joined the Colorado Springs Sky Sox staff. Chip started as Assistant Grounds Keeper, then moved into the front office as Group Sales Director and Public Address Announcer. Chip's legacy with the Sky Sox and our community includes creating and directing "Baseball Math" field trips and "School Family Nights" which combined, have educated and entertained over 150,000 area students and their families. Chip also created the opportunity for hundreds of school and church choirs to lead Sky Sox fans in The Star Spangled Banner, Take me out to the Ball Game, and God Bless America. As Public Address Announcer, Chip's was the rich and familiar voice from the press box for the past seven years. Chip's other passions were reading, golfing, fishing, hunting and writing poetry. Chip Dreamer will long be remembered for his humor, work ethic, professionalism, love for his family and friends, and his strong and inspiring response to his illness. Chip is survived by brother Terrell of Alvo, Nebraska; son Scott of Bristol, Indiana; grandchildren Austin (10) and Alexx (6); and Judy Webster of Manitou Springs, who was the love of Chip's life for the past 13 years. Although Chip's melanoma was diagnosed at Stage 4 in April of 2005, it was this wonderful family and the joy of seeing his grandchildren grow up that gave him the strength to courageously fight on for as long as he did. Private services to be held at Alvo Cemetery in Nebraska. The Sky Sox are honored to host a "Celebration of Chip's Life" on Saturday, January 24 from 1-3pm in the Centennial Banquet Hall at Security Service Field. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the "Chip Dreamer Family Fund", c/o Scott Dreamer, 411 River Road, Bristol, IN 46507.

I met Chip when I was 17 years old on a road trip his son Scott and I took as high school students. What I remember most was his warm and engaging personality and love for his son. I was profoundly sorry to hear he died and hope his memory is pasted to his grandchildren through Scott, another great guy.

I worked with Chip at the Sky Sox for the last 4 plus years. I will miss him very much. He started out being a little gruff but over time he became one of my best friends at work. He and Judy had a special relationship, and Chip was one of the finer people I have met. He made me feel appreciated and valued and like I was important to both the team and him personally. He always had a smile and a wish for a nice weekend or a good night even when you knew he felt awful and was facing major battles on the health front. He had dedication to his craft and his family and friends and he was unbelievablely brave and optimistic while facing the worst of diseases. If medals were given out for facing life with great odds he would be in line for one. I miss him and my best goes to Judy and his family.
