Ray Kohutek Obituary

On Friday, March 4, 2011 Ray Kohutek, age 62, left this earth to return to his Heavenly Father and rejoin beloved family and dear friends who have gone on before him. After a valiant 2 year battle, Ray died of metastasized cancer. Ray was born May 8, 1948 at Memphis, Tennessee. He was the 2nd of two sons born to Dr. Maj. Walter William Kohutek(a Texas cowboy) and Eloise Poulter Kohutek(a Logan, UT school teacher), while his father was attending Optometrist college in Tennessee. As an Army brat, Ray grew up at postings around the globe. He graduated from High School in Newport News Virginia and attended college in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was drafted during the Vietnam war, and served as an Army Ranger paratrooper on the Russian Front in Alaska. He manned a PT Boat up in Seward Alaska during the summers while on active duty. Ray married his childhood sweetheart, Regina Mettmann, on December 2, 1971 in SLC Utah. Their marriage was solemnized 7 years later in the Salt Lake Temple. Ray and Regina have 4 children, Matthew (Tamra) of Georgia, Robert (Ali) of Farmington Utah, and Marla and Randal, who both reside in Colorado. Ray has four grandchildren. Ray is also survived by a brother, Roy, of Salt Lake City and two dear cousins; JoAn and Louise, in Utah. Ray was a skilled technical worker in the telecom industry. He worked for Garrett Freight Lines in Pocatello Idaho, ANR Freight in Denver, and Colorado Interstate Gas in Colorado Springs, retiring after 27 years including multiple corporate mergers. Ray was employed at Centura Health with Penrose systems since 2002. Ray took great pride and put much effort into his professional work. He was an honest and upright man who displayed integrity in all he accomplished. Ray was an active High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in many assignments, from Scout Leader to the Bishopric. He was faithful and dedicated in his church service, and loved his church family dearly. He particularly enjoyed attending the temple. Ray had many talents; he was a fine carpenter, a practiced electrician, a real telephone technician, computer guru, and outdoorsman. He loved fishing with family and dear friends at Crystal reservoirs below Pikes Peak. Hunting up in the Idaho Grand Tetons with his good buddy Jack was an annual highly anticipated outing. He was an excellent marksman and shooter. Ray was the best when it came to out door grilling. His T-Bone steaks and Pork bar-b-q spare ribs were legend. He loved to ride his Gold Wing motorcycle with his wife perched behind him, cruising the Colorado countryside. Travel was his life long pastime. He was a tremendous road warrior, and enjoyed taking cruises with family and friends. He was especially solicitous in caring for his aged parents as they declined. The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Christine Bellantoni, Dr. Jim Simmons and Dr. James Young for their expert professional care and kindness. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday March 8th (with viewing beforehand @ 3pm) at the LDS Putnam Chapel located in Widefield near Grinnell Blvd & Crawford Avenue, 2 blocks from the Security Post Office. Burial will be at Mtn View Memorial Cemetery in SLC Utah following family services held there before internment. Adieu for just a little while, my sweetheart, until we embrace again in the eternities.

Ray is my father. For many years we were separated by long distances in the course of our lives. I want to pay my father the honor of saying that he was the greatest man, and the most incredable father that I Know. Sometimes I think my father felt like he hadn't succeded in guiding his children enough. Dad, you have been the best role model for me and I have used your examples of rightiousness in trying to raise my own family. Dad, you are a darn good man, and a great american! I know 100% that you have returned to our Lord in the highest levels of heaven. You took great care of us and mom and provided like a real master. Thank you so much for being my father. I love you dad, forever. Amen - Your son, Matthew.

I am so thankful to have known Ray at the hospital. I drew his blood often and we would talk of all the things he loved to do. I am so glad for all the times we had and his friendly smile. He was a great man and I will miss him dearly.

I am so blessed to know Ray when the was a young skinny fellow shortly after he met Gina some 40 plus years ago. I will never forget his laugh and positive attitude. He could do anything. We were the only ones I know of that took our motorcycles over the mountain trails from Alta to Brighton, sometimes carrying them over giant rocks and over drop offs and numerous obstacles. He was very competitive and tenanious. One of the best friends anyone could have. I will never forget the great times we had and It has stayed with me all my life. I regret putting off taking the time to go to Colorado and seeing him. I reflect on the Kohutek and Mettmann Families with fondness and thankfulness. Best wishes to Gina and children. Randy Brimhall

What a great and wonderful man! I will never ever forget the kindness when you showed up with a Ham AND a Turkey for our Christmas dinner all those years ago(1989). Nor all the follow up calls every Christmas Eve- for how long-- to see if I was in need of a Ham or Turkey. lol You and Regina are the salt of the earth--- always wanting to help others. What a wonderful Christlike attribute. You are my forever friend Ray. One day we will have happy and fun conversations again. I am glad that you are no longer in pain and I know you are happy to see your loved ones again.

Sister Kohutek and family. When I found out about Ray's passing I was extremely saddened. I know the Holy Ghost is there for you all in your time of grief. I will miss rubbing shoulders with him in our High Priest Group and his smile and handshake before Sacrament meetings. Sincerely,Brother Ruby, Kabul Afghanistan

As echoed from previous entries, we'll miss you, a lot. I'll miss your humor and minor rantings, and I hope you'll still be able to get a nice chicken sandwich.
