Grandpa Schmahl! That's what we called Ray. From the first day we met him and 'Grandma' Cureen in in 2002, we fell in love. They were the only family we had as a young couple in Colorado Springs, and the two of them knew how and taught us to live, love, and be happy. The time we spent together until we moved back East was the best time ever. But that was not the end of their love. They jumped on our offer to be our daughter's Godparents, and they were the best family ever. Even when Cureen was sick from the chemo, she always had time and effort for us. Ray always had time for Rick, spending time together working on cars, laying tiles (that was funny!), fixing faucets, and getting the basement cleaned out. They always made sure to visit and spend time with us. We visited often and Corpus Christi became our vacation spot. Snoopy's saw us coming and going, and the 'gang' of retirees at Marina Village became our friends too. Kitchen sink burritos were Ray's enemy: he loved them but they did not love him back. After Cureen's passing, we visited Ray and in his generosity,he did his best so we didn't feel her absence. But we always did! It was not the same. We still miss Cureen and always remember her.
Grandpa Schmahl, life is not the same without you in it: it's not as warm now that you are not going to pick up that phone or send that card. It was already hard without Cureen, but you kept the traditions going and never missed sending birthday and Christmas cards. You always called and checked on your Goddaughter and sent her letters and congratulations. She loves you and will forever remember you and Cureen as her grandparents.
I know you and Cureen are finally together, laughing and giggling and trying to tell us to be happy because you are, finally, home together. I will always remember you as happy and giddy as the photo below.
I love you. When I see you again, we will go cruising and singing Cureen's happy song that became my favorite: Don Williams' "Tulsa Time."
Sorry for the long trip down memory lane, but I miss you and I wish I had more time to tell you how much I loved you. Give my best to Grandma. Renee for the Jacksons.
