Raymond Schmahl Obituary

Schmahl
Major (Retired) Raymond George Schmahl
December 28, 1932
September 6, 2024

Born in Buffalo New York to Howard George Schmahl and Catherine Schmahl (nee Mack), Ray was the youngest of three boys. He married Cureen M. Cummer in 1951. After a few years of marriage, a few kids and a stint in the National Guard and the power company Niagara Mohawk, Ray got the opportunity for full time active duty in the U.S. Army with a commission as a 2nd lieutenant.
The "two kids from Buffalo" were off on a military life. That life included multiple assignments to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas where the family could move with Dad. It also included assignments in South Korea and Vietnam where mom and us kids couldn't go. Dads final assignment was to Colorado Springs in 1968. By this time the family had grown to 3 boys and 3 girls.
Their family was the center of their lives and they loved exploring Colorado with all eight of us in the station-wagon pulling the pop-up camper. Their adventurous wanderlust took us all over Colorado on weekends and holidays. They became quite effective ambassadors and tour guides for family back in Buffalo until well after all of us kids were out of school.
Then the wanderlust hit again and Dad and Mom were off on their own explorations in a more civilized camper. They toured most of the southern US coast al areas and eventually found and fell in love with "The redneck Rivera" Corpus Christie. They became winter Texans and spent the warmer months in Colorado Springs. Cureen passed in 2009 and Ray took up permanent residence in Texas.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Bud and Fred and his wife Cureen. Ray is survived by his six kids Ray, Ron, Sue, Sandy, Sheryl and Randy. Thirteen grand-kids and eleven great-grandkids.
A final internment service will be held at 10:00 AM on October 19th at Shrine of Remembrance 1730 E. Fountain Blvd. Colorado Springs.

Grandpa Schmahl! That's what we called Ray. From the first day we met him and 'Grandma' Cureen in in 2002, we fell in love. They were the only family we had as a young couple in Colorado Springs, and the two of them knew how and taught us to live, love, and be happy. The time we spent together until we moved back East was the best time ever. But that was not the end of their love. They jumped on our offer to be our daughter's Godparents, and they were the best family ever. Even when Cureen was sick from the chemo, she always had time and effort for us. Ray always had time for Rick, spending time together working on cars, laying tiles (that was funny!), fixing faucets, and getting the basement cleaned out. They always made sure to visit and spend time with us. We visited often and Corpus Christi became our vacation spot. Snoopy's saw us coming and going, and the 'gang' of retirees at Marina Village became our friends too. Kitchen sink burritos were Ray's enemy: he loved them but they did not love him back. After Cureen's passing, we visited Ray and in his generosity,he did his best so we didn't feel her absence. But we always did! It was not the same. We still miss Cureen and always remember her.
Grandpa Schmahl, life is not the same without you in it: it's not as warm now that you are not going to pick up that phone or send that card. It was already hard without Cureen, but you kept the traditions going and never missed sending birthday and Christmas cards. You always called and checked on your Goddaughter and sent her letters and congratulations. She loves you and will forever remember you and Cureen as her grandparents.
I know you and Cureen are finally together, laughing and giggling and trying to tell us to be happy because you are, finally, home together. I will always remember you as happy and giddy as the photo below.
I love you. When I see you again, we will go cruising and singing Cureen's happy song that became my favorite: Don Williams' "Tulsa Time."
Sorry for the long trip down memory lane, but I miss you and I wish I had more time to tell you how much I loved you. Give my best to Grandma. Renee for the Jacksons.
