Raymond Sprenger Obituary

Raymond Willis Sprenger, 91, went to be with the Lord on April 22, 2016 in Colorado Springs. Ray was born on January 27, 1925 in Donnellson, Iowa to the late Henry and Hilda (Galle) Sprenger.

After graduating high school, Ray entered the United States Air Force. Lt. Col Sprenger served thirty years, first as a fighter pilot in WWII, then as a radar systems specialist at NORAD and other military installations. Upon retirement, Ray worked at Ampex in Colorado Springs fifteen years before fully retiring.

He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Woodley, on June 29, 1947 in Iowa. They traveled the world during his military career. Ray and Bonnie had four children who all reside in Colorado Springs. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, riding his bicycle, and gardening vegetables for the supper table. Ray loved his family deeply. He was a faithful provider, a devoted father, and took much joy in his many grandchildren. He is also remembered as a loyal friend to lifelong neighbors.

Ray is survived by his son, Steven (Gail) Sprenger; daughters: Cindy (Stan) Scherr, Sue (Steve) Willis and Sheila (Bill) Carter; brother, Robert and sisters: Fern, Martha, Dorothy, Nancy and Isla. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bonnie; brothers: Carroll and Walter, and sisters: Ruth and Wilma.

Memorial services and military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 East Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910. A reception will follow at the Olympian Plaza Reception and Event Center, 975 South Union Boulevard. Private interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation.

Grandpa Ray was a wonderful, loving man, and I regret being so far away we weren't able to spend more time with him and Granny. My heart goes out to all the family. Our Angie is married to their grandson, Eric. Love and God bless. Kay Enoch

Dear Gail, Steve,and Family, We are so sorry to hear of your father's passing. It is so good you could get home. He looked like such a nice, kind man. We enjoy seeing all of your family pictures on Facebook. He lived a beautiful life by the looks of your pictures! Cal and I are thinking of you. Prayers to your family!!! Love!
