Rex Bennett Obituary

A Celebration of Life for Rex L. Bennett, 85 of Colorado Springs, will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the El Paso Club in downtown Colorado Springs from 4 to 7 pm. Mr. Bennett passed away on February 9, 2017 in Sun Lakes, Arizona.

Born in Abilene, Texas, Rex spent his early days at the family ranch near Denver City, Texas. In 1941, the family moved to the Colorado Springs area and ranched at Falcon and Peyton where Rex attended Falcon Schools, then Abilene Christian High and Abilene Christian College.

On June 21, 1953 Rex married former Girl of the West, Louise Watson, who preceded him in death. In October, 1953, Rex joined the army and was eventually stationed at Camp Hale, Colorado with the 10th Mountain Division, living for a short time in Redcliff. After discharge, he was active in ranching, real-estate development, and livestock sales in the Colorado Springs area.

Rex served on the board of the El Paso County Planning Commission, was former President of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association, a member of the Broadmoor Golf Club, El Paso County Soil Conservation Society, and was a Mason. An active member of the Pikes Peak Range Riders since 1953, he participated in 26 annual rides, leading the ride on a memorable trip over Weston Pass in 1969. He was President of the Colorado Springs El Paso Club in 1986, and married his current wife, Sherry K. Hughes, there on Nov. 22nd of that year. He was also a member of the Mount Massive Lakes Trout Club near Leadville.

Rex is survived by his wife, Sherry K. Bennett, daughter Sharon R. Bennett, grandsons, Jeffrey Cullers, wife Vanessa, and great granddaughters, Arielle and Juliette of Ft. Collins, CO and Jason R. Cullers and wife Jennifer of El Paso, Texas, and daughter Janice Bennett Good and husband Bob Good of Buena Vista, CO, and granddaughters, Dr. Anna Marie Jones of Grand Junction, CO and Christina L. Jones of Portland, Oregon.

Memorials may be made to The Pikes Peak Range Riders Foundation or Pikes Peak Hospice.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
