Rex and I attended elementary, junior high and high school together. He was a close friend and was one of the groomsmen in my wedding in 1976.
As kids, we would bike ride to one another's homes to play. At his house, Rex's mom was always so nice, and I enjoyed her British hospitality. At my home, we liked to explore my neighborhood canyon. In fact, we slept in sleeping bags, near the edge of the canyon, in a wooden "fort" that my dad and I had built. There was a trap door in the roof of the fort, and we opened it to be able to gaze at the stars as we talked and read by the light of slowly dying flashlights. We also liked to listen to music (The Beatles and, one of his guitar heroes, Chet Atkins), and just enjoyed the simple pleasure of each other's company.
Rex worked at an early age and had a paper route. I would often bike with him on his rounds, and when he had collected his fees, I'd often follow him on his well-planned, efficient route to all the neighborhood comic book stores where he and I would add to our collections. He kept his comic books pristine in individual plastic bags, organized meticulously on shelves he had installed and that lined the four walls of his room. Then, when he outgrew his collection (which had reached over 4,000 issues), and when really realized what he had, he sold it and bought his first car! (I wasn't as industrious and still have my collection of about 1,000. Golly, that might barely buy a set of automobile tires these days!)
He came to the Lord Jesus before I did, and he made an impact on my decision for Christ while we were yet teenagers.
Our 50th high school reunion was to be held in 2020, but it didn't happen. And now, two years later, our high school committee has arranged a reunion, which is to be held Thursday, October 13, at the Admiral Baker Club in our old hometown of San Diego. As I hadn't seen Rex's name on the guest list, I had been trying to reach him by phone. Now I see - and was saddened to learn - why I wasn't able to connect with him.
I regret that my wife and I never got to meet Julie, and our hearts and prayers go out to her for the comfort and peace that only Jesus can bestow.
I miss my childhood friend Rex, but know I'll see him again. (He's graduated to his new home before me, so I look forward to seeing him in the reception line when I arrive.)
You were a great friend, Rex, and we'll continue where we left off someday.

I was fortunate to serve with him on the UPAC and get to know his gentle leadership. I will be out of the country and regret missing his memorial services.
