Barney and I flew together for many years. Barney was the person I did my telephone interview with when I was hired on as a loadmaster. He only asked me two questions, "Are you old enough to shave?" and "Do you drink beer?" After answering yes to both, he said "your hired!". Shortly after becoming a loadmaster, Barney was my first contact for references to be hired into Civil Service at the JPPSO office in Colo Sprgs. A long lasting career of 13 years now. Thank you, Barney, for opening the door to my future. He will be missed and I am honored to call him a friend. I just have to smile everytime I think of him.

I took my first flight on a C-130 with Barney as a loadmaster in 1989. We were doing touch and goes in Pueblo and shut down an engine. Being new in the plane and thinking we should have four operating engines and not three, I gave him a nervous glance and held up three fingers referring to our three still spinning props. He looked back at me, smiled, held up two fingers, and went back to eating a burrito. I then knew we were going to be ok. It's almost been 20 years since I saw Barney give me that look and I think of it anytime I'm having a bad day in the plane. It reminds me that a C-130 will fly and get me home safe. Thank you Barney. You'll be missed.
