Richard H. Beck Jr. of Monument, Colorado passed away after a lengthy illness on December 20, 2023. Richard was born on November 14, 1938, in Miami, Oklahoma to Richard and Marguerite (nee Moore) Beck. He graduated from Grand Junction High School, and after attending Colorado School of Mines for one year, decided to join the Marines. Richard was assigned to 1st Composite Radio Company. He spent four years primarily in Hawaii and on various ships in the Pacific. He then attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated with a dual degree in Psychology and Chemistry. From there, he went on to complete his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at Colorado State University in 1971.
He began veterinary practice in Monument, CO and opened Front Range Animal Hospital in 1972. During his early years of practice, he provided care to both large and small animals. After several years, he limited his practice solely to small animals. He was passionate about his work and loved seeing all of his patients and their people. He was fortunate to have many wonderful colleagues and fantastic employees over his long career that continued into his late 70's.
Richard was a curious person who pursued many interests throughout his life. He loved the mountains and the desert. He grew up fly fishing, hiking, and camping. He ultimately climbed all of Colorado's fourteeners. He loved reading, woodworking, and photography as well. He was also a bird enthusiast. He and Donna were fortunate to travel to fascinating places; often accompanied by his sister in-law and brother-in-law.
He spent more time in his study of archaeology in recent years. He and Donna loved spending much of their time exploring and camping in the magnificent wonders of the desert Southwest.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Charles (Chuck). Richard is survived by his wife of 34 years, Donna, his sister Jane (Ron) Bacon of Hoquiam, WA, and his sister Sally Beck of Clifton, CO. Also, he is survived by several nieces and nephews. And, he leaves behind his big dog Zeke.
Family and friends will especially miss his kindness, love of animals, intelligence and wry sense of humor. The family wishes to thank all of his doctors, nurses and others who helped him so much over the years; as well as Pikes Peak Hospice at the end of his life.
