Richard Kates Obituary

Richard (Dick) Alexander Kates died at home surrounded by his beloved family on May 6, 2009 at the age of 74. His full life began in Brooklyn, New York, son of Joan Marie Dua and Irving Kates on November 22, 1934. He attended Peddie School in New Jersey where he was a star athlete and valedictorian of his class. Mr. Kates graduated from Yale University in 1956 with a B.A. in Political Science. He was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. While a student at Yale, Mr. Kates met the love of his life, Sue Ann Glenn, of Leechburg Pennsylvania, who was a student at Smith College. After graduating from Yale they were married in 1957. The Firehouse Carwash soon became a Denver institution, and for the next 30 years was ranked 3rd in the industry west of the Mississippi River. At the time of his retirement in 1987, Mr. Kates employed 78 people full-time, providing education funds, health plans, and retirement benefits for his long-time employees. Indirectly I claim responsibility for getting Dick and Sue together. At college I pledged Chi Phi. A year later Dick and the other two roommates (Roger Hinkson & Mike Bromberg), jealous of the fun (amount of beer) I was having, joined the same fraternity. A fraternity brother invited his beautiful, red headed sister to a function, Dick moved in, and that was that. Ted

Dick will be missed. Our lives became entangled on the first day of college and then through all the pranks and joys and upsets of early youth. And then to the chance meeting with his lifelong love, Sue. Dick will be missed. Roger

Even though I have known Dick for only 3 years, he became a close friend. We will all miss him, my best wishes to his family. We had alot of fun together about different subjects. He shared with me about his love for his family and his fondness of my boys. We learned alot of different things together which I will hold close to my heart.

I'll miss my pal, rrommate, fraternity brother, fellow outboard enthusiast of 52 years. Seems like yesterday that he raced in the Albany to NYC outboard marathon , with me driving the boat trailer. :ove-- Mike
