Richard Kearns Obituary

Richard D. Kearns It was Tuesday August 5, 1941 and in Liberal, KS, Murray and Vera (Zongker) Kearns introduced son Richard. He was the 4th child born and Pappa was so proud to have a son. Girls are great and a son is super. One of the three daughters born before Richard gave way to death but another daughter was born in 1946. Early on, music was important to Richard and he began at age 3 singing in church, which later took him to several countries around the world. His parents taught him at the earliest about Jesus and His love. It is God's love and his friends that sustained him in his long battle with cancer. Early life took the Kearns family from the farm in Stevens county Kansas to Canon City, Colorado, and after 5 years back to Kansas in Wichita, where Murray worked at Friends University. Vera taught school and was a great homemaker. Richard graduated from high school in 1959 from Friends Haviland Academy in Haviland, Kansas, then in 1961 graduated from Friends Bible College. Work and weather took him to Phoenix where he married and had three super kids, but divorce ended the marriage. The three kids David (Monica), Dian (Matt Tackett), and Darin (Shelda Cay) brought seven marvelous grandkids into Richard's life. The three kids and grandkids, wife of 35 years Donna Jean (Jones), three sisters, and a host of friends survive to enjoy the memories Richard shared with all that knew him. July 1967 saw him move to Colorado Springs where he worked for C.S. Utilities. After leaving CSU he owned Kearns Painting Service and since 1983, BASIC, Behavior Attitudes Seminars in Colorado. He also enjoyed for over 5 years, pastoring the Beaver Park Friends Church in Penrose, Colorado. It is now August 15, 2008 and life as counted in days is over but eternity has been opened to Richard where day shall never end. Visitation Services will be held on Monday, August 18, 2008 from 12:00 PM until 4:30 PM at Advantage ~ Chapel of Memories, 829 S. Hancock Ave, Colorado Springs. Celebration of Life will be held at First Friends Church, 2748 E. Pikes Peak Ave, Colorado Springs. Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 2:30 PM, with interment at Evergreen Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Barclay College, Haviland, KS. 67059 or Friendship International PO Box 50884, Colorado Springs, CO. 80949, or take someone out to eat. Donna & Family,
I am sorry for your loss. Richard was such a nice man and I know that he has been in such pain for so long. He is free now and he is watching over his loved ones so you will always have a guardian angel with you. Remember that it is better to have loved and lost than never loved at all. Please give me a call when things calm down for you and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I've always regarded a friend as someone that obligated me to be the person I could be, but gave me the freedom to be the person I am. Richard was such a friend to me. I am sure many regarded Richard a good friend. That's just the way he was. Donna, David, Dian, and Darin; Richard loved and was so proud of you all. He loved his grandchildren and he enjoyed telling stories about their latest exploits. There is no doubt that Richard is now singing in God's Heavenly Choir. The only question is, is he singing tenor or is he singing bass?

To Donna and family: We have very fond memories of Richard when he lived in our apartment in Wichita years ago, and many good times together. He's singing with the angels now! Our sympathies and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry to hear about Richards passing but I know that he is healthy and happy in heaven. I was in the same class as he was for 3 years of high school and 2 years of college at Friends Academy and College in Haviland, KS. He was a character and always kept things lively. He was a good friend to me. I want to send my sincere sympathy and prayers to Richards family. I know you will miss him very much. May God bess and comfort you.
