Richard McMahon Obituary

Dick McMahon, 85, passed away June 8, 2012 from injuries suffered in a fall. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; sons, Bud (Gail) and Sean; daughter, Jody Gurreri; 10 grandchildren, Christopher (Kristin), Brandy (Paul), Michael (Kristina), Jeffrey, Justin, Katy, Joshua, Amanda, Caterina and Isabella. Dick has 2 surviving brothers, Teddy and Bob; sister, Barbara and 8 great-grandchildren. Dick and Betty hosted many USAF cadets, opening their house and hearts to them as well. He was preceded in death by his parents, 8 siblings and his son Rick. He was born in Staples, Minnesota, one of twelve children to Rachel and Stephen McMahon. The McMahon family farmed in both Minnesota and North Dakota. During WWII Dick served in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper. No longer able to fly following a collapsed lung, Dick then joined his brother in the U.S. Navy and served on the battleship USS John W. Weeks. While based at the Naval Station in Algiers, Louisiana, Dick noticed a beautiful girl on a departing ferry and leapt across from the dock to make her acquaintance. He married that beauty, Elizabeth, on February 1, 1949. Dick and Betty and their two young sons, Rick and Bud, moved to Kokomo, Colorado in 1951 where Dick began his lifelong career as an electrician. The family moved to Colo. Springs in 1955. Dick was a lifelong member of the B.P.O.E. 309 and IBEW 113. He served in the Army, Navy and Air Force Reserve for a total of 33 years. He was a valued employee at UTMC until his retirement in 1996. Dick was a hardworking, kind and honorable man who led by example. He was a great cook and an even better storyteller. He was a fine woodworker, building furniture from clocks to cradles for family and friends. He enjoyed cribbage, gardening, and trips to Cripple Creek, spending time with Sean and Jody and their children and venturing on boat trips with son Bud, soon becoming the resident boat electrician. Dick loved his neighbors and would do anything to help on projects, large or small. He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be at Evergreen Funeral home on June 21st from 4-6 p.m. Funeral service will be at Corpus Christi Catholic Church at 12p.m. Friday, June 22 with inurnment following at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs. Losing Dick leaves a huge void in our little neighborhood. His generosity and grace permeated the 20 years that we were privileged to know him. We miss him and are inspired by the memory of his understated selflessness and quiet strength. Sympathies to his family from the Campbells.

My father was an honorable, hard working and loving man. As you can see by the comments from his family and friends Dad was a great man with an incredible ability to have a positive impact on everyone that he met. He was a quiet man that led by example, not necessarily by words. Dad never met a stranger and would help anyone at the drop of a hat. Our family and all of our friends will miss dad but we will carry him in our lives forever. I love you Dad.
