February 12, 2025

Dr. Richard Moothart of Colorado Springs passed away at home on February 12, 2025 at the age of eighty-six. Richard was born on May 5, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Bernice and Dillman Moothart. He was the second of three sons David and Dennis.
Richard graduated from Newton High School in 1956 where he played football, ran track, and received a scholarship to Iowa State University. Richard was inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame in 2021. In 1960 he graduated from Iowa State with a Bachelor of Sciences with honors. He was licensed as a preacher with the Methodist Church in 1959 and went to Union Seminary in 1960. Richard decided to leave seminary and went to teach in the Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii where he met Patricia Fitzgerald. Richard decided he wanted to become a doctor and went to the University of Rochester where he graduated in 1967. Patricia and Richard married while he was at Rochester and had their daughter Christina in 1966. They moved to Denver, where Richard started his residency at the University of Colorado. They moved to Beale Air Force Base, California where Richard served as a doctor in the Air Force and their daughter Cindi was born in 1969. They returned to Denver where Richard was a Fellow in Cardiology. Richard joined Colorado Springs Cardiology in 1974 and their son Richard was born that year. Richard served as a cardiologist for thirty-five years until he retired in 2010. Richard served as a Chief of Staff at Penrose Hospital and a Chairman of the Colorado Heart Association. Richard later remarried his best friend, Barbara Moothart, in 1981 and Barbara's son, Scott Setterquist, became part of the family. Richard was a caring and attentive father to each of his four children, attending all of their sporting events and extracurricular activities.
Richard loved to ski and cycle. He did many rides throughout Colorado, the United States and the world. He regularly planned mountain bike trips with his friends. Richard and Barbara travelled the world going to every continent except Antarctica. Richard was a member of Chapel of Our Savior since 1975 where he faithfully attended and served on the vestry. Barbara and Richard also attended St. David of the Hills Episcopal Church when they were at their cabin outside of Divide, CO. Richard was a regular member of a local book club and Bible study. After he retired in 2010, Richard volunteered at Peak Vista where he received the Volunteer Clinician Community Health Champion Award in 2018.
Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Moothart, his brothers, Dennis and Dave Moothart, and his niece, Linda Moothart.
Richard is survived by his children: Scott Setterquist and his wife Mary of Austin Texas, Cindi Fong and husband Danny of San Francisco, Richard Moothart II and wife Rachel of Colorado Springs, and Christina Moos and her husband Alan of Macau, China. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Loryn and Will Setterquist, Patti, Brendan and Aidan Fong, and Luke and Jaxon Moothart, and Kaia and Becca Moos, as well as his nephews Mike, Casey, and Nate Moothart and sister-in-law, Michele Landers, his nephew Michael and his grand-niece, Delaney of Upland California.

Dr. Moothart was a wonderful cardiologist and a very big part of my husband's care team. My husband wasn't even thirty when we met Dr. Moothart but he told him several times he was his favorite patient! Through stress tests, heart caths, open heart surgeries, aortic dissections, code blues and everything in-between Dr. Moothart was amazing.
