Richard Munger Obituary

Richard G. Munger, age 78, of Colorado Springs, died Monday, June 20, at his home. Richard, the son of Fay and Ruth Munger, was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on May 25, 1927. Richard grew up in DeSmet, South Dakota, and graduated from DeSmet High School in 1945. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945, serving 27 years. During his military service, Richard served during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, earning eight medals of Good Conduct, a WWII Victory Medal, and an Army Commendation Medal. He retired as Master Sergeant in 1973 at Fort Carson, Colorado. After his military retirement, Richard worked for Kirschner's Bakery for 15 years, and he earned his B.A. from the Colorado School of Business in 1976, graduating with honors. Richard was joined in wedlock to Rose Kim in Brown Mills, New Jersey, on September 22, 1969. The couple has one child, Linus Munger, a network engineer in Columbus, Ohio. Even though he was a veteran of three wars, the toughest battle Richard fought was his five-year battle with cancer. His bravery, optimism, and courageous attitude earned him the respect of his family, friends, and caregivers. Grateful for having shared his life are his family: wife, Rose; son, Linus; brother, Bill; sister, Karen; his nieces and nephew; and his good friends, including: Bill Sloan and the Park family. His family and friends will remember Richard as a loving father, devoted husband, thoughtful brother, fun-loving uncle, and loyal friend. They will also treasure the memory of his quick wit, strong spirit, optimism, and love of friends and family. Richard was preceded in death by: his grandparents, parents, and one brother, James. His absence will be felt deeply by those who knew and loved him, and he will be remembered in their hearts and thoughts. His family and friends take comfort knowing that he is now in a place of peace and happiness. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22, 2005 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral services with full military honors will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2005 at the Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel of Roses. Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's memory to the American Cancer Society, 1445 North Union Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909.

We are so sorry for your huge loss. We will miss our conversations and laughs with Richard. The kids' birthday parties will not be the same without Richard here, as he sat watching football during all the festivities!! We got a kick out of him being here and we will always remember him on those days!

You are in our thoughts and in our hearts!

It was always "Uncle Richard" with us, since we've known him for 30 plus years. I have to agree with Linus that the Denver Broncos have lost their number one fan...he loved and hated them. We had great get togethers for the holidays or picnics throughout the years. I will miss his humor, his laugh, and his smile.

My thoughts and prayers are with Richard's family and friends who will mourn his loss and remember him fondly. His niece Deana says he was to her mother the kind of big brother she always wanted to have.

I encourage others to post their favorite memories of Richard.
