Richard Pattee Obituary

Pattee
RICHARD WAYNE PATTEE
September 15, 1958 August 12, 2018
Richard (Dick) died at the University of Washington Medical Center of complications following emergency open heart surgery.
Dick was born and raised in Colorado Springs. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Colorado State University. He spent the majority of his career working for Hewlett Packard in Oregon before retiring to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington.
As a youth Dick began developing his lifelong passion for hiking and mountaineering, eventually summiting all 54 of the Colorado 14ers. Despite undergoing two complex open heart surgeries at ages 32 and 51 he continued his active lifestyle. He summited Denali, thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, bicycled around the perimeter of the United States, hiked and biked the Continental Divide Trail, and just last year thru-hiked the Colorado Trail. It was important to Dick to give back to the environment that he loved by participating in trail construction and repair. Throughout the 17 years he lived in Washington he volunteered extensively in Olympic National Park.
In a final act of his generous nature Dick had asked to be an organ donor. His organs have given new life and hope to the recipients and their families.
Dick was predeceased by his father, James J Pattee Jr, M.D.; birth mother, Jane Pattee; and brother, James J Pattee III. He will be sorely missed by his beloved wife of 39 years, Heidi; his mother, Barbara J Pattee; his sisters Nancy (Brian) Malitz, Lisa (Henry) Carter, Amy (Scott) Colvin, and Barbara (Alex) Szabo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

My memories of Dick are pretty exclusively from growing up with him in the mid-60's and early 70's as "Audubon" kids in the school we attended.
Dick exuded an excitement about learning and knowing things. He was well-liked and well-respected as one of the "brains" of the lot, and always had a very upbeat disposition. If ever there was a difficult question presented, we often looked Dick's way for the answer, as the final authority... and if he didn't know it, we figured no one did.

His "shock white" or very blonde hair made him instantly recognizable in any gathering. He was kind and genuine.

It's gratifying to hear that Dick lived a full life on his own terms, and enjoyed the outdoors by being a conscientious caretaker of its wonders. I celebrate Dick's life, his zest for living and accomplishing all those ascents of the 14ers in Colorado. I am grateful I knew him for a small part of our shared experience growing up.

I am very sorry for your loss. I can imagine how heartbreaking it is to lose a loved one, but it's uplifting to know that God promises us in Isaiah 65:17 a near future in which not only will we not feel this horrid pain in our hearts when we lose a loved one but we won't even remember how it felt.

I did not know Dick "Giraffe" but felt compelled to offer my condolences after reading his amazing story. I wish I had known him and know he will be delighted in the hereafter as well as welcomed with open arms. What an amazing man he must have been.
