Richard Powell Obituary

February 13, 1936 - January 22, 2008. Richard W. Powell, Major (U.S. ARMY, Retired) passed away January 22, 2008, at Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was born in Wallkill, New York, to William H. Powell and Marion L. Mackey. He married Faye E. Galick in 1956 in New York, and Sandra S. Perkins in 1993 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is survived by his wife Sandra; sons, William (Desiree), and Mark; grandchildren, Rachel, Brian and Richard; and by brother Larry (Barbara), nephew Tom and niece Gloria. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lois, and grandson William. Richard joined the Army National Guard in 1953 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 1957. He went on active duty in 1962 and attended an advanced officers course before being sent to Karlsruhe, Germany. In 1966-1967 he served as an Artillery Battle Commander in the Vietnam War. Major Powell then attended Defense Language Institute in Washington D.C. and served in Saudi Arabia, 1960-1970. He attended Command Leadership School from 1971-1973. He received the Bronze Star with the Oak Leaf Cluster and Joint Services Accommodation Medals. Upon a medical retirement he had fought valiantly, he moved to Colorado Springs where he volunteered as a deputy with El Paso County Sheriffs Posse from 1984-1996. Funeral Services will be held in Wallkill, New York on Saturday, January 26, 2008.
