Richard Shelton Obituary

Richard Duane Shelton and family invite you to celebrate his life on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church, 2511 N. Logan Ave., Colorado Springs, Colorado. Rick was born January 24, 1945, in Colorado Springs, graduating from Wasson High School in 1963. He was a member of the Army National Guard, commissioned in 1968 as a 2nd Lt. Rick died unexpectedly at home, at the age of 64, on June 27, 2009, of an apparent cardiac episode. He is survived by wife Sally Shelton (Dorris), son Jeremy, father Lloyd Russell Shelton and wife Betty, sister Diana Lantz and husband Merle, their children Noelle and Travis, brother-in-law Johnnie Hall and wife Janet, and Johnnie's children Staci and Scott. He is preceded in death by his mother Lillian R. Shelton (Holloway), sister-in-law JoAnn Hall (Dorris), and father and mother-in-law, Arthur and Vergie Dorris. Rick has been involved in the homebuilding industry all of his adult life. Beginning with Crissey Fowler Lumber, he evolved to home builder and designer with Gertsch-Mendenhall both locally and in Cheyenne, WY. Upon his return to Colorado Springs, Rick established Shelton Homes. At the time of his death, he was employed as a building inspector for the Regional Building Department. Besides his love of golf, and his tremendous loyalty to friends and family, he was known by all of his willingness and enjoyment for helping others. Rick was respected and loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Society.

Oh Sally - While my heart is in so much pain on the same day that you lost Rick, I lost my son Danny. I will keep you in my prayers and know that I feel the same pain but know that the Lord will get us through this.
If there is anything I can do, please let me know. May God give you strength and courage to get through this painful time.

TEN YEARS, IT JUST WASN'T LONG ENOUGH. SOMEONE ONCE SAID: A SMILE IS A LIGHT IN THE WINDOW OF A FACE, WHICH SHOWS THAT A HEART IS AT HOME. WASN'T THAT TYPICAL OF RICK. A MAN THAT LOVED HIS FAMILY, A MAN THAT HIS FAMILY LOVED. A MAN THAT RESPECTED HIS WORK, A MAN THAT HIS WORK REPECTED, A MAN THAT LOVED AND A MAN THAT WAS LOVED. PEACE BE WITH YOU.

On Sunday before news of Rick's death even reached us, my sisters and I were sharing stories about which boy cousins we had had crushes on. Mine was Rick. To this day I still have his high school graduation picture that I used to carry with me and tell my friends he was my boyfriend before I fessed up to the truth that he was my handsome cousin.
My prayer is that God's grace will sustain all of you in your time off grief and loss.

My time with Cousin Rick was much too short. It was always fun to be around him. The memories I have with him are so precious to me. Words are not enough to express how much I will miss him.

Wow, what to say... We really enjoyed talking to Rick at the Luau dinner. I (Gendy) was so looking forward to getting to know him better - such a sweet man. Through this difficult time, we want you and your family to know you are in our thoughts and prayers. May the love shared with family and friends comfort you during this time of loss.

I've known Rick for about 25 years. He was one of the old timers that survived the ups and downs of the building business in Colorado Springs. He was very knowledgable about the building industry, but more importantly was knowledgable about life. Rick will be missed by all that have known Him.

I worked with Rick several years ago at RBD. When I left he gave me encouraging words and I still go back to those same words today! His smile will be greatly missed.

Rick would always go out of his way to help. When he took me out for the RBD ride-along I soon learned that he had so much to give & freely did. He was so proud of his family & always spoke highly of them. I am blessed to have known him and will miss him.

Rick was the chosen one when office staff had to go on field ride-alongs. With great patience and kindness, he willingly shared all of his knowledge. It brought joy to my heart to hear his loving expressions of Sally. I will miss seeing his warm smile at RBD.

Rick was my building inspector for almost three years. He was always professional and courteous and a joy to be around. I learned a lot from Rick and I will truly miss our chats as we walked through my buildings. Rick, I feel lucky to have known you--God Bless you and your family.
