Richard Clair "Dick" Vermillion of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father on February 26, 2008. Dick was born August 7, 1928 in Independence, Kansas to John F. and Mabel R. Vermillion, who preceded him in death, as did his brothers, Jimmy and William. Dick was a devoted husband to his wife of 42 years, LaVonne Vermillion, who survives. He was a loving father to Richard, Beverly, Don and Ron (Janice) Miller and Lynda Long. Dick has left behind the joys of his life, his six grandchildren: Justin (Jennifer) Long, Becky (Daryl) Willmon, Angela Miller, Brian Miller, Karen Miller and Kevin Miller; and three great-grandchildren: Makenzie, Nate and Isaac. Dick is also survived by his brothers, John and George (Barb) Vermillion and Dick's close friend of many years, O.J. Ahrens. Dick was honorably discharged from both the US Navy and US Air Force and retired after twenty-five years of dedicated service with the US Army as a Civil Servant. A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Central Christian Church, located at 2002 W. Pikes Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs. I am Dick's niece, Kim. My father is William, one of Uncle Dick's younger brothers. My father loved his brother so much. Uncle Dick was one of the brightest spots in my father's relatively short life. Uncle Dick seemed to always understand (but never judged) my father's trials. They were kindred spirits. While I am deeply saddened to learn that this dearest of men has left this earth, I am truly comforted to know that our Uncle Dick and his mother, father, and his brothers, Jimmy and Bill, are reunited; their arms entwined as only family with the promise of eternity spent together can summon.

On behalf of Bill' Vermillion's children, Stephen, Kathy and David, we wish you peace our dearest Uncle Dick. We will miss you but look forward to the day that we can join you and our father in heaven.

I had hoped to say this at the Dick's Celebration fo Life, and had even brought notes with me--please allow me to enter a condensed version:
It was an honor to have Dick as a friend as it is an honor to share this about a very, very good man. I met Dick and LaVonne in 1990, when my parents bought a season house across the street. It didn't take me long to learn and appreciate Dick's deep love for LaVonne. My family shared many great times with the Vermillions: Birthday celebrations, sweet corn parties, neighborhood or holiday get togethers. My last visit with Dick was very recent at Sunny Vista and LaVonne was in the activity room so Dick and I spoke privately. I told Dick that he had been an excellent example for me, and for others with his positive outlook, and dedication and love. After repeating myself Dick modestly accepted my compliment but told me, David, "I am a rich man as LaVonne and family have enriched my life". He repeated that too me twice, just as I had the compliment to him. Dick expressed his relief that he and LaVonne got moved to Sunny Vista, together, and that he knew LaVonne would be cared for when his time came. Dick again said, David, I am a rich man. This verse from Proverbs 22:1 has since come to mind: A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches and loving favor rather than silver or Gold.
I remember the twinkle in Dick's eyes, many times, including during this last conversation, as he told me how much he appreciated LaVonne and family. With that in mind, please remember, with me as we see the stars twinkle at night--that it takes many stars to light up the skies...and thank Dick for being part of our constellation. Dick was a very, very good man.
God speed Dick-----
Again, I regret not sharing in person at Dick's celebration of Life, but did not know the family had completed their time of sharing. Respectfully, I share my thoughts now (somewhat condensed).

I will always remember Dick as a kind, patient person. He was compassionate and caring. Somehow he always seemed to keep a good attitude, regardless of the trials he was facing. He will be missed.
