Richard Waite Obituary

Richard ("Rick") Waite IV, Age 73, died September 21, 2012 in Annapolis, MD. Born September 15, 1939 in Winchester, MA to William Henry and Margaret (Sprague) Waite. Attended high school in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Graduated in 1962 from U.S. Naval Academy with B.S. in Marine Engineering. Attended Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA, served seven years active duty in Navy, and fifteen years in Naval Reserve, where he retired as a Captain in 1984. While visiting his mother and sister Joan in Corte Madera, CA, Rick was introduced to Lynn Sweetland, the love of his life. They married on May 4, 1963 in San Francisco, CA. They had four children: Nancy, Michael, Colleen, and Jeff. During active duty, Rick spent 18 months aboard USS Aludra. He served in Danang and Chu Lai, VietNam, then Quonset Point, RI where he was Aviation Supply Support Division Officer until resigning from active duty in 1969. Rick worked in the petroleum industry with Exxon for six years, followed by twenty-seven years with Velcon Filters as Product Manager for aviation fuel filtration products, retiring in June 2002. He was Secretary of the Fuels Cleanliness Section of ASTM from 1978-2002. He was Editor of the Aviation Fuels Quality Control Procedures booklet, receiving the Dudley Award. He volunteered at Penrose Hospital as a Professional Pharmacy Stock Specialist for nine years. Rick's many hobbies included hockey (Go Avalanche, Sharks, Bruins!), cars, motorcycles, sailing, flying his Cessna 172RG, and cycling. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed following politics. Always the gentleman, he never left home without a handkerchief and his Swiss Army knife. He was an incredibly generous man. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather Henry ("Kit") Carson; brother Bill; nephew Marcus Corbett; and his son, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; children Nancy Whitford (Todd) of Colorado Springs, CO; Colleen Bumpas (Bryan) of Edmond, OK; Jeff Waite (Mari) of San Ramon, CA; sisters Joan Corbett (Laurence) of Portland, OR; Peggy Clemmer (Barry) of Jefferson, NC; Barbara Waite of Georgetown, TX; six grandchildren: Katie and Annie Whitford of Colorado Springs, CO, Colton and Brennan Bumpas of Edmond, OK, Charlotte and Violet Waite of San Ramon, CA; and twelve nieces and nephews. A vigil service will be held on Friday, October 19 at 7:00pm and a memorial Mass will be held Saturday, October 20 at 11:00am, both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2650 Parish View, Colorado Springs, 80919. Private burial will take place in Wakefield, MA.
