Rick Thomas Obituary

Rick Thomas, 46, of Colorado Springs, CO passed away on January 30th, after a valiant and courageous battle with a rare form of kidney cancer. He was born in New Haven, CT and was raised north of Toronto, Ontario. Rick attended University of Guelph (Ont.) and graduated with a BS in Computer Science with an emphasis on aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, FL. Rick was a Captain with the US Air Force for 12 years, where he became an aircraft commander and instructor in air refueling on the C-5 Galaxy before making lieutenant. He became Chief of Standards and Evaluations, thus earning the rank of Captain. He had been a First Officer with American Airlines for the past 13 years. In addition to his flying career, he had his Colorado Real Estate License and assisted his wife in their business at ERA Shields Real Estate. Rick was a loving, caring, giving and truly empathetic man who was incredibly funny and could light up a room with his smile and personality. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hiking, skiing, fishing and mountain biking. He is survived by his wife Suzette and their 3 children, Jake (10), Max (6) and Chloe (4); his parents Jim and Lynn Thomas of Maricopa, AZ, his brother Jim (Bev) of Columbus, OH, sisters Annie Howell (Brad) of Kensington, MD and Michele Chamblin (Alex) of Bellevue, WA, and many adored nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 5th, at Swan-Law Funeral Home (501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs) from 6-8p.m. A celebration of Life service for Rick will be held at Rocky Mountain Calvary Church (4285 N. Academy Blvd.) on Wednesday, February 6th, at 1:00p.m. A reception will follow internment at Swan-Law Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the education fund for the children by sending checks to Suzette Thomas at 5475 Tech Center Drive, Suite 300, Colorado Springs, CO. 80919.

Suzette, to you and your children I want to extend my deepest sympathy. I flew one of Ricks first missions in the AF Reserve. A great guy, friend, husband and Dad. Many great memories of our time together. Wish I would have met you and your children on a happier occasion.

To the Thomas family,
My husband and I were so saddened to hear about Rick's passing. We are both flight attendants for American and I only had the priviledge to meet Rick one time, on a commuting flight. We were seated next to each other and I left thinking he was one of the nicest people I had ever met. It was probably around 4 years ago, when Suzette was getting ready to have their youngest child. You could see the love he had for his family as he talked about his kids, Suzette and the new baby on the way. I got off that flight thinking that this would be a family I would love to get to know better!! His warmth, friendliness, love for family and zest for life was all relayed to me in that short hour and a half flight. What an amazing man! Suzette, I have never met you but I am so sorry for your loss. I can tell you have a wonderful family to support you, as I met Rick's sister, Michele on her flight into COS. Mike and I wish you many blessings in the years to come and we're sure both of your personalities will shine through in your beautiful children. If you ever bring the kids over to Manitou please look us up! Kind regards, Stephanie Sawyer

Dear Thomas Family,

It has been a privilege and an honor to have known and served with Rick in the US Air Force Reserves and to have worked with him as a fellow pilot at American Airlines. Rick certainly had an amazing personality that rubbed off on anyone he came in contact with. I will miss him greatly.

Suzette, although I have never met you, I have been lifelong friends with Annie, growing up with the Thomas family clan since we were all children. I feel I know you in a way with all the wonderful things she has told me about you and your precious family. Rick was an amazing man and brought happiness to all who surrounded him. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your three beautiful children and to the entire Thomas family at this time of sorrow. God bless you all. Kathy Donnelly.
