Robert Adler Obituary

Robert Alfred Adler, 91, passed away peacefully at the Colorado State Veteran's Nursing Home in Walsenburg, Colorado on April 24, 2005. Mr. Adler suffered a very long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on September 23, 1913 to Alfred A. Adler and Esther N. Nilsson. Robert was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 641st Bombardment Squadron, 409th Bombardment Group, WWII. He participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, The Battle of the Bulge at Utah Beach, June 6, 1944. In 2001, he was awarded the French Government Gold Medal for his bravery in action in the Allied Forces march to free Normandy. A member of the U.S. Congress from the State of Colorado presented the medal to Robert at the Colorado State Veteran's Home in Walsenburg. He retired from the Federal Civil Service in 1971. A long time Black Forest, Colorado resident, Robert lived the later years of his life in the Cortez, Colorado area where he was known as "The San Juan Gunsmith." He had a life-long love of history and at the time of his death, had a wonderful collection of history books about the great wars that were turning points in our nation's history. Robert was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Laura Frances Fraser, in 1974. He is survived by his four children: Patricia Chamberlain, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Paula Fraser, Seattle, Washington; Gregory Adler, Windsor, Colorado; and Robert Adler, Naples, Florida. In addition, he is survived by his grandsons: Kurtis Haring of Sacramento, California; Sean Adler of Naples, Florida; his granddaughters: Kristen Lichtenberg of Tacoma, Washington; Karen Lichtenberg of Amsterdam; Audra Johanson, U.S. Navy, Rota, Spain; Tori Adler and Laura Adler, Windsor, Colorado; and his great-grandchildren, Brian Adler and Lauren Adler, Naples, Florida; his wonderful sister, Hazel Wilson, Lexington, Massachusetts; his brother, Karl Adler, Bedford, Massachusetts and many nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving visitors at Swan-Law Funeral Home, 501 North Cascade Avenue on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Eastonville Cemetery, Black Forest, Colorado. The Rev. Nick Natelli will be officiating.

I buried my hero, my Daddy yesterday - a send off he would have been so proud of. With the great Stars and Stripes he fought for - to keep this country free, the 21 gun salute and taps, it was just so fitting for him. For the past 5 years, I cared for my father and tried to keep him safe by placing him in the Veteran's Home, Walsenburg. I watched his decline -Alzheimer's is truly the long goodbye. Last week, I travelled from the Springs to be with him in Walsenburg everyday. I started hospice procedures on him Monday, April 18. He died the morning of my birthday. I am not sad about this, we shared a precious bond and his passing on my birthday sealed that bond for all eternity. I am honored to have been his daughter.

He was "My Daddy in the Fedora Hat."

It is extremely difficult for me to have lost him this way - I will miss him so much.

To everyone who has signed this guest book, I give my sincere thanks and appreciation. Lucy, please know that I am so delighted to read your email. Your precious promise to take flowers to my parents graves is very heartfelt and so appreciated by me. If you would email me back, I would like to be in touch.

To Dear Bob and his entire family...

My sympathies go out to all of you with the death of your father. I am certain that he is now in a better place without the signs of the illness he had to deal with for so long...which makes his leaving this place a blessing in disguise. I will be taking flowers out to the Forest to place on both of your parents graves very soon, I promise!

Greg,

I was sad to read of the death of your father. Many times I thought of him, especially on his birthday, which I remembered because it is also my mother’s birthday. We had several conversations at the local grocery store over the years. When I did not see him anymore, I wondered what became of him, how he was doing, if he was well.

Please accept my deepest condolences. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers during the visitation this afternoon and the services tomorrow as well as in the days to come. I know you will all miss him. He will never be forgotten.

I never met my Uncle Robert as well as his brother Paul...my dad, however, I have no doubt that they were the best of men.

Patti, again I'm so sorry for your loss. I have sent the tribute to the Cortez Journal for them to print as I'm sure he had friends here. Take care and I've got a shoulder for you if you need it. :)
