Robert Martin Carpenter, age 79, passed away at his home in Canon City, Colorado on May 9, 2024, after a short, five-month bout with cancer and other complications.
Bob was born August 9, 1944, in Payette, Idaho, the first of five children to Kenneth and Wilma (Anderson) Carpenter. He lived most of his life in and near Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he graduated from Harrison High School before joining the US Air Force in 1963. After four years, including service in Vietnam, Bob returned to Colorado Springs where he met and married his wife of 55 years Barbara Cheryl Gish. He worked in construction before entering his 35-year career with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 58, where he forged many lasting friendships.
This was a quiet, strong, healthy man who was a good husband, son, brother, friend and neighbor. He was perhaps a more spiritual man than he appeared to some due to a private nature. But, Bob believed in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and was grateful for his "miracle of no pain" throughout his illness and for the prayers of so many to that end. He loved the mountains and felt blessed to have lived there North of Woodland Park, Colorado, for 32 years with his wife in the beautiful mountain home he helped design and build with his good friend and brother-in-law Larry Powell. He really loved seeing, studying and living among the wildlife.
As a lover of the outdoors, Bob enjoyed many associated activities to include hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, boating, raising and riding his horses, cutting firewood, gardening, and time spent with his friends, family and his many dogs over the years. He had to be busy most of the time, a true DIY guy. Bob loved to build things; well, he was a real "carpenter."
Bob is survived by his wife Barbara and his little Aussie, Buddy; sisters Kay Morris, Weatherford, TX, and Nancy (Bill) Henson, Canon City, CO; brothers Gary (Angel) Carpenter, Calhan, CO and Dennis (Liz) Carpenter, Ramah, CO; brother-in-law Duane (Sandi) Gish, Sedro Woolley, WA; sisters-in-law Opal Leftwich, Corpus Christi, TX, Sandra Goin, Hardin, MT, and Georgia Petrie, Colorado Springs, CO; many nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and neighbors. Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
Bob had chosen cremation over burial and hated funerals. While no service is scheduled, a celebration of his life will be planned at a later date. Request no flowers or other gifts or donations.
