Robert Dunbar Obituary

Dr. Rev. Robert G. Dunbar, known as R.G. and Papa (Dunbar), went to be with The Lord on January 27, 2014. He was almost 88 years of age. Dr. Dunbar was a long time resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He and his family arrived in the Colorado Springs on July 4, 1959 with a revival tent that was set up in the vacant field that was just across the street to the original St. Francis Hospital. After the tent revival, He bought the church building at Weber and Platte and then built Lighthouse Temple at 111 No. 32nd Street, in 1968. He and a member of the Church laid all the moss rock that decorates the interior and exterior of the church on 32nd.

R. G. was saved and healed from MS at the age of 16 and he went to bible school shortly thereafter. He graduated from Beulah Heights Bible Institute in 1946, and was in full-time ministry until his complete retirement in April 2010. To help pay for his college tuition, he drove cattle and broke horses during his time in Wyoming.

For 14 years, He was an Evangelist and some years preached more than 400 times a year. He travelled and preached in all the continental states except Maine as well as in Canada and Mexico.

Dr. Dunbar sat on several boards during his career and was always a sought-after speaker at the Christian fellowship conferences held throughout the states.

R.G. Dunbar was born on February 13, 1927 in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He married his childhood sweetheart, Vernice M. Sellin on August 9, 1947. R.G. and Vernice would have been married 64 years. He is predeceased by his wonderful wife Vernice M. Dunbar (May 27, 2011), and his only sibling, Alyce M. Wenninger (July 27, 2011) and her husband, Dr. Joseph Wenninger, (January 19, 2010).

Papa is survived by his five children, in birth order, Susan D. Weixelman, (husband Jim), April D. Dunbar, Rev. Robert R. Dunbar, (wife Carol), Tammy D. Scott, (husband Chris), Vernie L. Mesa, (husband John) and "Like Family", Carla Lopes. He has 4 grandchildren, Robert G. Dunbar Weixelman, (wife Coty), Spencer E. Dunbar Argueta, (husband Orlando), Katie Lee Scott, and Alexie Joy Mesa.

He also has 3 great-grandchildren, Ethan R. Weixelman, Amber M. Argueta, Dominic U. Argueta, and another great-grandchild due in June.

Dr. Dunbar's home going celebration service will be held at Lighthouse Temple, 111 No. 32nd street this Sunday, February 2, at 10:30 a.m. His son, who is now the pastor of Lighthouse Temple, will be officiating the service. You are invited to join the Dunbar family and church body in remembering this powerful servant's life.

As a courtesy to the clergy of Colorado Springs, who he loved, there will be time to pay their last respects after their morning services between 12 Noon & 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The family wants everyone to remember him as he was, so these will be closed casket services.

We are elated that Papa has gone to be with the Lord, Mama Dunbar, other family members and countless people that were lead to the Lord during his time as an dynamic evangelist and pastor.

He was a dynAmic & dedicated preacher. Myself & Friends would oft visit in late 70's ... Ms Dunbar played a lively organ... we would picnic nearby so as to make evening services. Thanks for the wonderful services.

Brother Dunbar was one of the few people I have known in my life that I could sit and listen to for hours. He was never boring. He always uplifted everyone around him. He stood up strongly for Godly principles, lived by them and admonished others to do the same. He and Sister Dunbar were just plain old enjoyable to be around, AND, he could preach!! His legacy will live long after we are gone.

Am just hearing about the deaths of dear Pastor and Sister Dunbar...my deepest condolences to Susan, April, Bobby, Tammy, and Vernie. Had the privilege of attending Lighthouse Temple in the early '70's while living in CO. Shall never forget that time...worship was incredible...and no-one played the organ like Sister Dunbar! Was always blessed by the solos by April...such a beautiful voice! I'm still being blessed by hearing some of those services, as I recorded many and still enjoy them now that I'm in CA. Such fond memories and so much love for all the Dunbar family, as well as the Lighthouse congregation.

I'm 46 years old and still have not found a PREACHER as awesome as him and I was 10 first time heard him preach. He always gave God all the glory and would say that he had no power in his pinkey finger unless God put it there......love you both Pastor and Sister Dunbar! Thank Yal for showing us God's love and what He Really wants from his children

Heaven has gained a valiant warrior of the cross who left an outstanding legacy behind in his son Robert, who has stepped into some very large shoes, his daughters, spouses and grandchildren, all dedicated servants of the Lord! Papa Dunbar was one something very special to all who knew him. The memory of the limited amount of time we were able to spend with him will always live in our memory!

Lifeline Ministries would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Dunbar. We remember with fondness our friendship over the years. Dr. Dunbar was very interested in our mission work in Mexico and Haiti. Everytime we saw him, he would say, "Hey, Donny Boy, how's things going?" He had the distinction of being the only one to call me that. Lighthouse Temple has supported our ministry for lots of years and does so at the present time. Dr. Dunbar believed in what we were doing. We are so sorry that we won't be able to attend. "Donny Boy" is 81 now and has not been feeling well. This will get better and he will continue his Haitian ministry along with his wife, Trish, and daughter, Shanda Tripp.
We will keep the family in our thoughts and prayers.

Our hearts are sad with you at the loss of Uncle Bob, but we are rejoicing also that he is Home now, celebrating with all those who have welcomed him there.

So many memories, too numerous to list, all of them wonderful treasures to cherish forever. Uncle Bob was a life force unlike any other, a personality as big as all outdoors, and a heart to match. He had so many amazing stories of all those years in the ministry and evangelistic work, touching lives and sharing a message of salvation, forgiveness, hope and healing. He was always so generous with his love and laughter; fascinating to be around and just a wonderful person in every way. We loved him dearly!

Our prayers of comfort are with you, and we pray that you will feel the sweet presence of our Savior in the days ahead.
