Robert Albert Kalkowski, age 76, passed away November 2022 in his home in
Colorado Springs, CO.
Robert was born on March 11, 1946 to Robert and Irene Kalkowski in
Omaha, NE. After Bob graduated from Bellevue High School in 1964, he went on to study Architectural Engineering at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He started his career in
Omaha, NE working for Bahr, Hanna, Vemeer & Haeker as an architect. He then moved to
Chadron, NE and worked as a city engineer before relocating to Colorado Springs in 1985. After 20 years at the Air Force Academy, Bob retired from the 10th Civil Engineer Squadron in 2006 with 27 years of Federal Civilian Service for the Air Force.
Never married, Bob spent his time doing what he loved: hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and travelling. He was an accomplished artist and spent his time painting watercolors with a focus on architectural subjects and Colorado mining structures. A talented photographer as well, his time in Poland, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria are well documented through his black and white photos. He was particularly fond of the time he spent in London and Germany working on behalf of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe.
Pre and post retirement, Bob's additional passions included racing, model trains (n-gauge), collecting railroad memorabilia, model cars, wood-working, and refinishing furniture. As a model train enthusiast, Robert spent decades accumulating trains that reflected his passions for The Union Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroads which he meticulously organized in his train room along with his smaller WW II train and Orient Express collection.
Bob was predeceased by his father, Robert Paul Kalkowski and his mother, Irene Marie (Matula) Kalkowski. He is survived by his sister, Robin Kalkowski of
Boulder, CO and his beloved dog, Suka. He will be missed by his two nieces, nephew, his four grand-nieces, and four grand-nephews.
A memorial will be held at 5541 Mosquito Pass Drive in
Colorado Springs, Colorado on Friday, February 17 at 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, an organization with which Robert volunteered and strongly supported.
