Robert Klipping Obituary

Robert Samuel Klipping passed away with quiet dignity and courage in the home that he designed, viewing Pikes Peak, surrounded by loving family members. It seems a daunting task to capture the essence of this great man in one paragraph but we will try. He was born in Glasston, North Dakota in 1928 and grew up in Elk River, Minnesota. He served in the military in California and relocated to Colorado Springs where he fell in love with and married Gayle Swanson. He graduated from Colorado College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology in 1953. He went on to work as a successful geophysicist with a passion for his work for over 60 years. Early in his career his job took his family to many locations in the rocky mountain region where he shared his passion for the beauty of the outdoors with his wife and three daughters. In 1966 his job took him to Denver, where he worked for Pennzoil as their Exploration Manager for the Rocky Mountain Region. In 1979 Robert formed his own Consulting and Exploration Company, which he operated for 33 years. He was a member of the Denver Geophysical Society, The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, The American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Robert had passionate interests in astronomy, history, architecture and archeology. He collected antique cars and was an unparalleled woodworker, gardener and landscaper. Robert never missed an opportunity to laugh and tell a joke over good food, good drink and with good people. Robert instilled in his family an extraordinary passion for life, reverence for nature, and awe-inspiring dedication to his family, which will be carried on in our hearts forever. Robert was preceded in his death by his parents, Roy Klipping and Marie Klipping and his siblings, Lona Sage, Wayne Klipping, Marian Klipping, Jeanne Klipping, Phyllis Hefner, Inez Klipping Elliott, Doris Eggleston, Rochelle Thomson and Richard Klipping. Robert Klipping is survived by his wife Gayle, their three daughters, Barbara Schwartz, Sharon Klipping and Joan Klipping, his brother Vernon Klipping, and brothers in law, Myron and Edward Swanson, Barbara's husband, Dr. Michael Schwartz, and Joan's fiance, Christopher Findlater. He is survived by his grandchildren, Jeremy Schwartz, Chris Schwartz, Matt Bodenchuk and Julie Bodenchuk. Robert Klipping is also survived by his nephews and nieces including his nephew Robert Elliott and his wife Tamarinde Doane, The Gizzi Family, The Sage Family, The Eggleston Family, The Thomson Family, The Wayne Klipping Family, The Swanson Family, The Herber Family, The Kaufman Family and The Davis Family. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations to Pikes Peak Hospice. A memorial service for Robert Klipping will be held on Saturday, the 28th of April, 2012 visitation will be at 10:00 Am with service to follow at 11:00 AM, Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910. A reception will be following the service at Mosaic Restaurant located at the Inn at Palmer Divide, 443 South Hwy 105, Palmer Lake, CO 80133.

Hello Gayle, et all. Clark just told me of Bob's passing. It saddens me he's gone, but also refreshes the wonderful times running between 404 and 410 and great lunches at the P Club. Gayle I just know you and the girls will do fine. I'm wishing you the best and sincere condolences. Love, Holly [email protected]

Sharon,
I was sorry to hear about your Dad. It was an honor to call him "one of my former students" after he took a night course from me in the mid 70s. He was always friendly and caring whenever I saw him. It was interesting to hear of the Mexican plane crash that he and one of my former bosses, Bob Westmacott, survived. I am glad to hear that he enjoyed a long life.

Aunt Gayle, Barb, Sherry and Joanie,
My sincerest condolences to all of you for the loss of a very kind husband and father. I don't think it is possible to describe Uncle Bob without using words like gentle, devoted, loving and also colorful. He was colorful in that he seemed to enjoy living his life the way he envisioned and wanted. He had so many interests that it would be untrue to say that he did not live life to its fullest.
I remember so many times that our family (the Hefners) would travel to see Uncle Bob, Aunt Gayle and our beautiful cousins. It always seemed a little strange to us that Bob and Gayle had all girls and my family had all boys. But we all got together and shared many stories over the years to come. It was always a "treat" whenever my parents would tell us boys that we were going to visit Bob, Gayle and the girls in some far off location where Uncle Bob's work had taken him. I have fond memories of trips to Grand Junction, Casper, Wyoming and Hardin and Billings, Montana. I can recall many times after feasting on Aunt Gayle's cooking when we would all get together at the dinner table and play board games for what seemed like hours. And Uncle Bob and my dad would usually end the evening by bringing out these horrible smelling cigars. I think cigars were meant to be the reward at the end of a long day but all us kids seemed to find offense in the smell and smoke.
My earliest remembrance of Uncle Bob (as told to me by my parents) was in 1950 when Uncle Bob had started school at Colorado College. Shortly after Barb was born they all lived with us for awhile at a little two bedroom house my dad had bought in a new residential area called Security. Uncle Bob would commute to and from college from Security. It was also at this time that Uncle Bob volunteered to help fight the big fire that engulfed Camp Carson in 1950. Uncle Bob put his life on the line to help save countless lives in the huge fire that spread all the way from the Broadmoor and destroyed nearly all the wooden structures at the post.
Uncle Bob and I were always interested in some of the same things. We each loved astronomy, archaeology and antique cars. Uncle Bob was always interested in a 1962 Studebaker Gran Turismo I owned. I believe he would have bought it from me except for the fact I loved the car too. He also took great interest in my 1974 Dodge Power Wagon and said to me that he drove many like it during the time he spent in the fields looking for oil and gas. I remember not long after Uncle Bob built his home near Palmer Lake he somehow convinced me to sell him a telescope I owned. He later took that telescope and put it into an "observatory" he had built into his new home. The price he gave me was fair and I think we both enjoyed that telescope for many years.
I will sure miss Uncle Bob but I know I will see him again. His legacy lives on in the beautiful family he was so devoted to and proud of.

Aunt Gayle,Barb,Shari,Joan,
What can we say, you are mourning the loss of your husband and father. We are mourning the loss of our uncle the kindest and most gentle man I knew, Uncle Bob was probably one of the most intelligent people I've known, but also one of the "handy-est" also.Whether it be putting in a sprinkler system, deck, or building a smoke house or cabins. Bob knew what to do. He could look at something and know how it should be built or put together. Directions, no need he knew how things worked and the way it should be built. I think his love of old cars and my Dad's love of old cars rubbed off on me. I remember going to junk yards with Joan to get parts he needed for the "Master Deluxe". Uncle Bob is in our hearts forever and we'll miss him very much. Love, Mark & Mary Thomson

Aunt Gayle, My heart breaks for all of you at this time. Uncle Bob was an amazing man and he led an amazing life. How blessed you and your girls are to have had him for a husband and father. For as long as I can remember, I've loved and respected Bob and I will always cherish my memories of him and the times we were able to get together as a family. Grace and Jay were looking over our Colorado pictures last night and Grace wrote about meeting "Geologist Guy" in her journal and how sad she was that he's gone. Both kids remembered how he took them for a ride in his Thunderbird when we were there. I reminded them that someone as great as Bob, surely has a great place in heaven and that as long as we hold our memories of him in our hearts and minds, he'll never be truly gone. My love and prayers to all of you.
Love, Karen
