Robert "Bob" Lohse

May 29, 1934

December 24, 2021

Robert "Bob" Lee Lohse, 87, of Colorado Springs passed away suddenly December 24, 2021 at Penrose Hospital surrounded by family.

Bob was born May 29, 1934 at home in Daykin, Nebraska to Herman A. Lohse and Mae (Williams) Lohse, the third of five children. The family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1949. He graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 1951 in a class of thirty and the last under Dr. Shaw.

Bob married Sylvia Speir in 1953 and they had two children Kim and David and later divorced. He then married the widow, Jean Vickers Davis on June 16, 1984 and helped raise her two children, Cynthia and Scott. They had thirty-seven wonderful years together.

He started his career as a carpenter but when his father and older brother, Herman, Jr., started Herman's Plumbing he joined the family business. The business grew where they had work all over the state. Eventually, they broke the business into three separate businesses and Bob took the service part and it became Herman's Plumbing Service, Inc. in the little blue building on South Nevada. His son, David took it over when Bob retired.

When Bob and Jean married, he said he hoped she liked to travel. She had not traveled much but soon learned. They started out with a honeymoon Ports O Call trip to Kenya. After that there were many more trips abroad and in the US. He always marveled that a boy from a town of three hundred had managed to visit so many wonderful places.

One of his greatest pleasures was to play golf. Bob learned about the game when he was a caddie at the Broadmoor at 16 years of age. He was a member of Valley High and then Colorado Springs Country Club for almost forty years. Bob managed to play almost every course in the area, in the mountains, Mexico, and the Mt. Kenya Safari Club. During his golfing career he got two holes in ones and his brother, Roger witnessed both. He enjoyed the many times he played in charity golf tournaments.

Bob enjoyed helping others the best he could. He was a fifty-five year member of the Downtown Lion's Club where he worked on many projects and was involved with the Lion's Camp in Woodland Park. No matter how busy he was he managed to deliver for Meals on Wheels for twenty-five years.

Another of his favorite pass times was to listen to music of all kinds. He especially liked classic jazz. Bob was one of the founding members of The Broadmoor Jazz Club for thirty years. That changed into the Colorado Springs Jazz Party for the last seven years. Bob was very happy to have hosted many of the world class musicians in their home for these parties. He was a longtime member of the Four Freshmen Society and attended several of their annual parties and conventions.

Bob really enjoyed a good football game such as the Broncos and AFA. He had AFA season tickets from day one until his poor vision made it too hard to attend in person. Being an AFA fan led him and Jean to sponsor two cadet brothers, Scott and Tom Boushell with whom they are still in touch.

He was very outgoing and friendly to everyone and could get along with everyone. Bob attributed his outgoing personality and positive attitude to lessons learned through Dale Carniege.

Although he was a confirmed Lutheran, he attended First Presbyterian Church for thirty-eight years and was a member of the Pathfinders Sunday School

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Herman, Jr.; and wife, Joyce; brother, Roger; son-in-law, Sheldon Gallner; granddaughter, Alexia; and brother-in-law, Deiter Sutherland.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Kim of Omaha, Nebraska; son, David of Colorado Springs; step-daughter, Cynthia (Al) Hanna of Colorado Springs; stepson, Scott Davis of Colorado Springs; sister, Dorothy Sutherland of Grand Junction, Colorado; brother, Jack (Lynn) of Leesburg, Florida; granddaughter, Elyse Gallner of Omaha, Nebraska; grandson, Spencer Gallner of Omaha, Nebraska; grandson, Holland Lohse of Las Vegas, Nevada; Enzo and Brit Lohse of Colorado Springs; step-granddaughter, Paige (Cameron) Morisak of Salt Lake City, Utah; and step-granddaughter, Erin Ihrig of Grand Junction; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the firemen of Station 13 who have helped him many times, the medical staff at Penrose ER and The Springs Funeral Services.

Although I was never really able to spend time with Uncle Bob he was the light in every dark room. He was a sweet man. I continue to pray for Aunt Jean, and the family.
