Robert Lynde Obituary

Robert Elton Lynde, Coach Bob, took his "final lap" March 16, 2016, in Waikoloa, Hawaii. Bob was born on December 30, 1930, in Woodland, California. He was the only child of John Leo Lynde and Elizabeth Cora (McKeen) Lynde. Bob grad-

uated from Davis High School in 1949. He earned his BA and MA degrees at Sacramento State, and his MS and Ed.D. from the University of Oregon. He served as an officer and

helicopter pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps, 1954-1958.

Bob taught PE/Health and coached at Joaquin Miller Junior High School in Sacramento, Sacramento Junior College, and Churchill High School in Eugene, Oregon. He was a professor of Physical Education and Cross Country/Track and Field Coach at Sonoma State University from 1969-1997. Bob also served as Assistant Track and Field Coach at Cardinal

Newman/Ursuline High Schools and Santa Rosa Junior College after his retirement from Sonoma State University. He always looked forward to going to work in the morning.

A true Renaissance man at heart, Bob had a passion for Shakespeare, poetry, dancing, history, philosophy, and music. His humility, humor, and joy inspired students, colleagues, friends, and family throughout his life. Bob's glass was always more than half-full and his approach to everything and everyone was playful, positive, and encouraging. Bob handled challenges with patience, grace, and laughter. His mantra was, "What's all the fuss about?"

Bob participated in numerous marathons and triathlons,

including successfully completing the Ironman World Championship in both 1983 and 1985. Bob will be missed by his immediate family as well as his extended family of friends and former students. His impact on the lives of those lucky enough to have known him will continue though time. As

Albert Pike wrote, "What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others remains

immortal."

Bob spent most of his life in Sonoma County, California. He also loved Hawaii and enjoyed his recent years as a full-time resident of Waikoloa on the big island. He approached the end of his life with contentment and peace, allowing nature to take its sometimes difficult course without complaint and without medical interventions.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Lee Shaw, of Sonoma County/Hawaii; former wife, Emily Brooks Rowe, of Davis, California; children John Lynde Brooks (Theresa), of West Des Moines, Iowa; Dan Lynde (Robin), of Vacaville, California; Sally Lynde Johnson (John) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Molly Lynde-Recchia (Michael) of Portage, Michigan; Rob Lynde (Renee) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Paul Lynde Rowe, of Acampo, California; grandchildren Kimberly,

Michelle, Matt (Kaleena), Katie (Kurtis), Chris (Meryl), Adam (Linh), Ryan, Rebecca, Emily "Remi," Mireille, Rachel, Robert Nathan, Spencer, Tori, and great-granddaughter Kirby. Family and friends will gather for a celebration of Bob's life in

California.

The memories...oh the memories. Yet you still live on inside of us, all recipients of your humor, your class, your coaching, your spirituality. Thanks coach and friend, for 50 years of memories that live on.

I first met Bob when I tagged along with a friend to his class during a break between my classes. I was hooked. As a coach/dear friend he helped all of us think bigger than we might have on our own and do things that we might not have without his belief in us. Hard to imagine a world without him in it. I would rather think that he is still living on the Big Island enjoying life, beachside with a cold beer. Love to all his family. He will be missed.

It was my fortune to know and hang out with Bob a bit back in the late 70s and 80s. It was through his lovely daughter, Molly, that I got opportunity to know him. His energy and enthusiasm was boundless. One particular that really stands out was the spiritual component he brought to running. I can't say enough about this. Bob was a fitness pioneer. In closing, Bob was a true class act. He is one of those who leaves the earth with a positive impression. He made a difference. Cool guy and a hell of a lot of fun to drink beer with.

Linda and family: Oh what sweet, happy memories I have of coach Bob. There are several influences in my fitness life and Bob is one of them. His positive outlook on life and all things healthy has been a foundation for my profession and outlook on life in general. Love to you.

I was lucky enough to have Coach Bob as my coach during high school and Junior College. He was always so motivating and inspirational. He helped shape my life believing in me and being my cheerleader. Coach Bob (MvfCBiatw), you will be missed. Thank you for everything!
