Robert Mahoney Obituary

Robert Donald Mahoney, 85 of Colorado Springs, CO passed away peacefully on April 3, 2008 at the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Florence, CO. His life will be remembered by his sister, Florence "Sally" Long of Las Vegas, NV. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will cherish their memories of Bob. Bob was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Joan M. (Donahue) Mahoney, and his sisters Marie (Mahoney) Broman of Victorville, CA and Donna "Cassie" (Mahoney) Heezen of Clearwater, FL. Bob was born in Oelwein, Iowa in 1922 to Donald and Grace Elliff Mahoney. He graduated Oelwein High School and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. His assignment was to the USS CURTISS as water tender second class. During WWII, the USS CURTISS patrolled the waters in the Pacific Ocean near Japan where he survived a kamikaze attack. Bob was proud to serve his country and the US Navy. He returned to Oelwein, Iowa and married Joan Donahue in 1948. In the 1960's, they moved to Colorado Springs, CO where Bob was employed by the United States Air Force Academy. In his spare time, Bob was an avid hunter and marksman. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers Union and the American Legion Post. A military funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 3:00PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
