Robert McIntyre Obituary

Bob McIntyre, for 50 years the official photographer for the Broadmoor Hotel, died suddenly March 13 at his home. He was 83. He is survived by his wife, Roberta and daughters Jennifer McIntyre and Julie McIntyre. A third generation Colorado Springs resident, Bob was born January 4, 1928, the son of Harry E. and Ada (Norman) McIntyre. He was a 1947 graduate of Colorado Springs (now Palmer) High School and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in Japan. In his half century at the Broadmoor, he photographed celebrities from the worlds of sports, entertainment, business and politics, including seven presidents, that are featured in the Wall of Fame exhibit at Broadmoor West. His photos have been published in Life, Look, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, and Washington Post, among others. He is also known for his large panoramic landscapes of the American Southwest, particularly Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly. He was a member of the Professional Photographers of America and served on the board of the International Association of Panoramic Photographers. A celebration of his life will be held April 6, 5-7 p.m. in Broadmoor West. Online condolences at www.bluntmortuary.org.

As a long-time photographer, I tend to think of people and events in the form of snapshots, My snapshot of Bob shows a smiling fellow, cigar clenched between his teeth, a couple of Leica rangefinder cameras draped from his shoulders, standing near the eighteenth green of The Broadmoor East.

Bob and I photographed every guest room at the Broadmoor complex back in the early 1980s. It's the only time I ever set foot in the suite used by visiting Presidents!

I can picture the debutante balls, the holiday skating performances (with a young Charles Ansbacher gingerly crossing the slippery sheet of ice at the old arena), the world figure skating competition in that same now long-gone building. Bob covered them all - and always helped the working press photographers (like me) too.

As that fellow you photographed would say: "Thanks for the memories." Godspeed, Bob.

I worked with Bob for many years and I have been gone from The Broadmoor for 20 years, but I have many memories of Bob and the wonderful way he captured so many people and events. He was definitely one of the greats in Broadmoor history.

Dear Roberta and family,
Extensive travel will prevent me from attending Bob's service. Bob was a longtime friend. I always enjoyed his company and he will be remembered as a legend for his magnificent photography. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
