Robert LeGrande Pratt, 87, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away August 9, 2024, at his home with his wife by his side.
Bob was born September 26,1936, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His early schooling was in Salt Lake City and Denver, Colorado. In 1958, he graduated with a B.A. in Fine Arts from Brigham Young University, where, for three years, he was the layout and art editor of the yearbook, The Banyan. He also attended the Art Center School of Los Angeles and did post graduate work with the renowned portrait painter Alvin Gittins at the University of Utah.
After working a number of years as a greeting card designer for American Greetings in Cleveland, Ohio, he later taught art fundamentals there at the Cooper School of Art. Returning to Denver, he taught drawing and media at the Colorado Institute of Art and worked as a greeting card designer for Gibson Greetings. He worked as a freelance artist and exhibited at the Taos Gallery and the Gallery Santa Fe in New Mexico, and the Odette Gallery in Georgetown, Colorado.
A masterful craftsman especially in graphite and charcoal, he became well-known as a portrait artist in this medium. The sensitivity and artistry of his portraits have delighted friends, family and critics alike.
In 1978, he married his wife of 46 years, the love of his life, Heilke Franzen-Pratt, in Luebeck, Germany. They settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he continued to hone his craft up to the very end.
A man of inspiring intensity as a teacher, an artist of the finest caliber, he was loved by all for his sunny disposition, his intelligence and wonderful sense of humor and infectious laugh and for his devotion to his family.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his beloved sister, Sharon Pratt Wilbur of Bountiful, Utah, and 25 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Claron Ure and Virginia Reeves Pratt, his brother Richard Stephen Pratt and, most recently, his beloved sister Jeanne Pratt Groberg.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 1 pm, at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910.
